Gloucestershire/Wiltshire borders
« on: Sunday 26 February 06 17:59 GMT (UK) »

Hello  everyone,

I have an ancestor, Robert, who was born around 1802.  In the 1851 census stated that he came from Gloucestershire. In the 1861 census he came from Wiltshire.

Now I know that around the middle of the 1800's there was a changing of borders between the two.

My question is Where do I start looking for his baptism? Can anybody suggest any parishes that were formally in Gloucestershire but are now in Wiltshire?

I have not been able to find him on the IGI.

He was married in Avening and he was a stone mason. His name? ...... Jones.  Sad

I have come across a clutch of Jones' that were masons in Kemble & Poole Keynes. I don't know whether he could have been part of a family business or whether that was the prevailing trade in that area and every other person was a mason.

As I am not familiar with the area.... please could someone give me some direction and advice?   Undecided

Linda

p.s. I've also posted this on the Wiltshire boards.

Hi

On Your 1851 census info does it just say Gloucestershire for his place of birth or does it also say something else - possibly Stroud?

Hi

There were a couple of places that "moved" between these two counties over the years - they are shown in my old atlas as "islands" of one county in the other.

As Joanne implies, one was Kingswood near Wotton under Edge.  Another that comes to mind is the village of Minety, near Cricklade.  The latter is nearer Poole Keynes than the former.

kind regards, Arranroots  Wink

Oops!  I missed Poulton, near Fairford, which was formerly in Wiltshire.

Either way. Kempsford is right on the border and he might have been born on a farm which was even nearer!

Hello, Joanne & Arranroots,

The only reference I have to Stroud is after Robert died, his wife Abigail (keene)states that she is from Stroud.

They were married in 1820 in Avening and the 1st child I have been able to find (nine years later) was also born in Avening, Joel 1829. (all as yet unconfirmed).

It doesn't appear that the IGI covers much of that area, although I've been able to check Kingswood, Poulton & Kempsford and he's not on those registers.

After Joel birth they moved to Clerkenwell in London as the next child William Robert (my ancestor) was born in London in 1831.

Do you know of any online parish registers for that area?

Many thanks,

Linda Smiley

p.s. I'll have to remember for future reference that you Gloucestershire lot have go faster stripes!  Cheesy

Kemble was another of the parishes that 'moved' between Glos & Wilts - so your man could be from the Kemble Jones family.

Thank you for the reply Ruth,

Do you happen to know whether there are any parish records online for Kemble?

I don't know of any online records for Kemble. I have some baptisms & burials - but only post 1813 - and I think you needed 1802.  Sad

Every now and then I read old postings just in case my present info. covering a subject now covers the request - it doesn't but . . . . . .

If you search for Kingswood Wiltshire at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hughwallis/IGIBatchNumbers/CountryEngland.htm you will find it near Wotton Under Edge (a WIL island in GLS in the Bishop of Gloucester's diocese!) but your Jones is not in any batch.

You could try using the procedure at http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/FindingBatchNos.html for parishes near where he might have been.  Use the free prog. Parloc (Google will find it) to find names of parishes anywhere.

This may not help but the search will be interesting perhaps.

Regards

Hi Linda,

You probably have this info by now but just in case you haven`t here are Joels baptism details:-

Joel Jones - 22nd February 1829 at Forest Green Independent Chapel, Avening
Birth Date - 13th January 1829
Parents - Robert & Abigail

I found it when looking through my Nonconformist transcripts, I couldn`t see any other baptisms for children of Robert & Abigail.

Hi Sue,

I do have this baptism (from the IGI), but it wasn't until you said that I realised it was a non conformist church.

I should have realised when it said "Independent Chapel"................. a dead give away!  Roll Eyes

Thanks for the info,
