Help to decipher 1841 Census - Selby
« on: Sunday 26 February 06 22:21 UTC (UK) »

If anyone has access to 1841 Census for Selby, I'd be pleased for help in deciphering the occupation for a Thomas Foster aged 15 living in Millgate.

The reference is 1281/13/28

Many thanks

Had a look, checked letter for letter against others the enumerator
has written and can only make it, - Clob m - whatever that is, or if it is.
I have a list of old job titles somewhere on this computer but my
filing system has failed me. Someone will tell us before I find it.

Hi Oly

Thanks for having a go at this, it's frustrated me for about a year now.  I read it as Clot.  I too will have to find my list of old job titles and see if I can find anything remotely like it.  Thanks again

There are two possibilities for 1851, both work in the building industry - Brick Yard LAbourer, and Brickloayer - maybe it coud have been clod man in 1841 [clod hopper]??
