Agnes Gilsby of Wigton
« on: Wednesday 01 March 06 07:22 GMT (UK) »

He everyone,

I am hopelessly lost, I am trying to trace any details on Agnes Gilsby (born about 1830) and her family, they apparently came from Wigton.   She married Robert Robson  about 1848-1850.  Robert came from Dalston.

Any help would be very much appreciated, I am completely stuck on this branch.

Regards

Hi Gwyn,

I have found your family in the 1861 census - which I think you must already have given the info in your post.  It is unfortunate that there are no town names for their places of birth.

However, I can't find any trace of them in any other census.  How is it that you know her maiden name was Gilsby and that she was from Wigton?  And how do you know Robert is from Dalston?  I can find no marriage between people of that name, nor any trace of a Gilsby family in Wigton.

Are you sure about the name Robson?  It has been transcribed that way in the census, but on the original image the first letter has been corrected and is difficult to read.  I tried to find them under another name that ends in "son", but no luck there either.

Can you please post all the details you know and how you know them? Hopefully that can help us find them!

Hi MJP,

I have Robert Robson's father, also Robert Robson on the 1851 Census and it shows the family livng in Dalton, I am doing this research for a friend and she has told me that Robert Robson (b 1862/63) married Agnes Gilsby and that the family came from Wigton in Cumberland.

Like you I have searched all the usual scourses but I can find no trace so I suspect that the information I have been given is incorrect.    There are not many Gilby's in the world by the looks of it.

Thank you for your efforts and if you ever come across any info please let me know.

Regards
