Hi I wonder if anyone can help me. My 2 x great grandfather Robert Waters was born 8th december 1846 - he was baptised on the 8th march 1847 at the Parish Church of St Michael in the county of Berbice, British Guiana. Roberts parents Walter and Frances or Fanny are both from Andover area of Hampshire. By 1851 they are living back in Upper Clatford Hampshire.
So they spent a fairly short time in British Guiana - anyone have any idea of what they might have been doing there ?
Also are there any pasenger lists available from the UK to Berbice, British Guiana
Cannot find the marriage of Walter to Frances, and am wondering if they married on board ship or perhaps in British Guiana.

What was Walter's occupation? Was it likely that he may have had family/inherited property over there or was there a Navy/Merchant Navy link?

Hi jorose
That's just it, I don't know. In 1841 on the census before he went he was a 16 yr old no occupation given, in 1851 back in the UK on the census his occupation is given as "relieving officer" , by 1861 he is relieving officer and registrar.
So I don't think there is a naval connection, he doesn't have a naval background. His father Joseph was a licensed victualer, there may have been money in the family in 1841 Walter's grandfather John is described as Ind. Presumably Independent means.
But my take on this is that money, if there was any was probably made during his time in Berbice, as I am guessing, you'd have to be pretty well set up to be the relieving officer ?
thanks for your response Siouxzie

Relieving officer/registrar suggests possibly a civil service link? If you could get hold of the original parish records from British Guiana I'd expect them to give a father's occupation.
www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documentsonline - there's a will for John Waters, in 1803, 'Candover', Hampshire, and one for a John Waters, gentleman, in 1828, Eling, Hampshire - either of these yours?
Of course the link might be with Fanny's family - did they have any other children so you can get a birth certificate and find Fanny's maiden name?

Hi jorose, Yes I know Fanny's maiden name it was Findon or Finden -I believe her parents were John Finden and Sarah Hunt, she was born Ropley. They were married Ropley, Southampton 1819. Although apart from 1841 she states her birthplace as Alresford, Hants. So some discrepancy there. Yes looking into Fanny's family might be the way to go.
Thanks for the wills link. I 'm not sure about your John Waters of (C)Andover, I have a copy of the will of John Waters dated 13th January 1805 - this is John the grandfather of Joseph Waters who in turn was the grandfather of Robert. The family seems to live on the Wiltshire /Hampshire border back then and the address is given as Park House Cholderton Wiltshire.
Having looked at the baptism certifcate again father's profession is mentioned it says "manager".
