Huntingdon Union Workhouse
« on: Thursday 02 March 06 07:33 GMT (UK) »

Hi
In 1901 there is a Mary Ann aged 77 widow born Yaxley resident in the Hunts Workhouse.

Her surname has been transcribed as Shotton.Has anyone got a resource which would tell me whether this is actually Mary Ann Swinton baptised 1823 Connington?

I know she was alive in the 1891 census in Northants, cannot find a death 1891 -1901 but if this entry is an error there may be death after 1901.
Would any records of admission/departure/ Creed  still exist?
Very grateful for any leads.
Marlene

Hi Marlene

I would have transcribed it as STRATTON!

And whether it's coincidence further up the same page there's also a John Stratton, correctly transcribed, single 75 ag lab also b Yaxley.

It might be easier to prove that it's Stratton rather than it should be Swinton

Just looked at 1891

In Huntingdon there was
Mary A Stratton h wid 63 b Yaxley
John Stratton boarder single 61 ag lab b Yaxley

Even though the ages are a bit adrift I don't think she's your Mary Ann Swinton

Regards

David
