I have a large family tree of people who are all descended from George CHANTRY or CHAUNTRY and his second wife Elizabeth HIGGINBOTHAM or HIGGINS of Halam, Nottinghamshire. George and Elizabeth were married in 1725 at the Parish church in Newark, Nottinghamshire. Known locations for descendants of this couple (apart from Nottinghamshire) are Derbyshire, Lancashire, Leicestershire, Yorkshire, U.S.A., and Australia. I would welcome any comments, enquiries and information.

Thank you maidmarianopps, for telling me there is information on Ancestry world tree.
The records you quote are the ones I already have. George CHANTRY and Elizabeth HIGGINS who were married at Newark in 1725 are my 7x great grandparents.
Elizabeth was baptised at Halam, Notts. 30 May 1705 the daughter of Richard and Elizabeth HIGGINBOTHAM. They seem to have used the names HIGGINS, HIGGINBOTHAM and HIGGINBOTTOM.
George was christened at Newark the son of William CHANTRY. I'm not completely convinced he was Dorothy ALLIN's son. William did married Dorothy ALLIN 4 May 1678. However I have never found a burial for Dorothy. There is a burial for Alice wife of William CHANTRY 10 October 1702 which might suggest that William was married more than once. William CHANTRY was buried 3 March 1712.

Hi,
I'm fairly certain that Sarah (1679) , Elizabeth (1680) and George (1687) were all the children of the same father, William CHANTRY. There is also the possibility that Mary CHANTRY was his child. She married Thomas HERNSHAW 21 December 1708 at Newark. I researched this family in Newark PR about 15 years ago. Most of my information comes from the parish registers except for some American and Australian material that came from other researchers in those countries.
George CHANTRY baptised 10 May 1726 was the son of George CHANTRY and Elizabeth HIGGINBOTHAM (or HIGGINS). He was christened at Halam and he married Hannah LOW at Halam 20 February 1750. They were my direct ancestors, their second son Richard, baptised 20 Oct 1751 at Halam was my 5x great grandfather. He married Sarah MACHIN at Arnold, Notts. in July 1774.
One of the user submitted trees on Ancestry.com has muddled "my" Richard with his uncle, also Richard, who was baptised 20 Nov 1732 and married him to Sarah MEAKIN! I don't like to just edit their tree it seems a bit cheeky. So I think I will try to send an e-mail - heres hoping the address is still functional.

Hi Sylvia,
Yes I have access to Ancestry.com. I've just been adding some of my CHANTRY family to the One World Tree.
George CHANTRY & Hannah LOW and Richard CHANTRY & Elizabeth BLAGG are from my family. Don't know who William CHANTRILL & Mary HURST are.
Although I've known about them for a long while I can't place the other marriage at all - Richard CHANTRY & Susanna GREENWOOD at Newark 24 April 1826. They were married by Banns. Richard signed his name as 'CHANTERY'. The witnesses were William HOPKIN and Ann CARLILE.

Hi,
As you say names do seem to have been spelt as they were pronounced. The main deviations seem to come with the vowel sounds. This is particularly obvious where the name starts with a vowel - like EDLIN, or AYRES - whereas a name like CHANTRY will usually keep its beginning at least. Although in this case it can acquire a "u" in the first syllable and become CHAUNTRY. However I have found the ending of the name CHANTRY is more likely to change and become "trey", "trie", "tery" or "tree". All of these (and a few more) variations occur in my notes though not in my computer files because the computer software tends to assume the first spelling it is given is the one to be used all the time and I'm too lazy to correct it!!
