Roney - 1827 to 1834
« on: Sunday 05 March 06 21:02 UTC (UK) »

Hi all,

Newbie here so please be gentle  Wink

I'm trying to trace a Peter Roney (b1800) and his son (also Peter b1827) who came over to (probably) Whitehaven and settled in Ulverston (1851 census), Lancs between 1827 - 1834 and remarried. But I have no idea where to start?? I've posted here as Co Down seems the most likely for Roney's but any pointers on where to look for records on the 'net would be most welcome.

Thanks,   Stewart Roney.

Stewart, I would start by looking at
Ros Davies website ie freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~rosdavies/  Ros Davies is just County Down Search. Use the site for surname(s), placenames, churches and maps under the surnames. The parish maps showing townlands. Roney and Rooney are there. Reading through gave me a flavour of the name
Michael RONEY . Magheradrool regt. Ballynahinch; husband of Mary Ann Fitzimons; father of Peter b. 7 Dec 1867 CR
Peter RONEY . Drumgooland of Derryneal; will probated 1827 IIW V4 p132
Rev. Peter ROONEY . Dromara parish priest in Dromara 1529 DDPP p72
Peter ROONEY . Drumgath regt. Rathfriland; husband of Bridget O'Hear; father of Bridget b. 28 Feb 1870 CR
Peter ROONY . Newry a cooper; c. 1805; buried St. Marys Catholic graveyard MIs
Peter ROONEY . Warrenpoint husband of Ellen Doran ; father of Bernard b. 20 Mar 1865 & Peter b. 20 May 1871 CR
Peter ROONEY . Warrenpoint husband of Bridget Rooney; father of Mary b. 2 Apr 1865 CR
Peter ROONEY . Warrenpoint husband of Catherine Dowdal; father of Mary b. 12 Sep 1871 CR
I thought the most likely leads are Drumgooland of Derryneal, could this Peter Roney be making a will before leaving Ireland? or the Newry entry. Was their any family tradion in being Coopers Finally Ros reminds one of the varaiant spelling O’Roney. I just looked at all these quickly you will need to do it slower and accurately

Next I would switch to familysearch.com. Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints sponsors the website www.familysearch.com.  There is much to learn as to how to use it to its maximum. You can search for just the records for a surname in Ireland. The missing search element for you is the place associated. Its library catalogue and CD collections are worth investigating. I have not found errors myself, but other genealogists say it isnt 100% accurate and one needs to check the information at source.[As one should do anyway] immediately another spelling to note Rowney  I looked one up
PETER RONEY  Birth:  1828   Of, Dundalk, Louth, Ireland  Death:  1912    Parents: Father:  PETER RONEY  Family Mother:  ALICE CROMBY  Could this be your family, its showintg that tradition of naming a son after father You will have to look up the rest of the Peter Roneys relevant by date.

I have run out of time and need to stop at that. Further suggestions are

Ulster Historical Foundation ie www.ancestryireland.co.uk/
The UHF has a sister website accessible ‘ History from Headstones’
Public Record Office of Northern Ireland [PRONI] ie www.proni.gov.uk/ . I always look up each of their database eg freeholders, covenanters, etc.  At first you get areas which are invaluable, then they have a system of seeing further information. Search the site thoroughly always as they have so much.eg location of church registers ie births, marriages, burials, etc

Have you asked all your living relatives what they know ? My lesson is not to put this off. Next year is often too late. Are you ready to contact the living in the area with the same surname if you become sure its right for you to think in one of my pursuits, the lady's memory became damaged.

Message boards other than Caora .  I personally always use the message boards at www.genforum.genealogy.com/ and RootsWeb.com ie www.ancestry.com. / (On both of these I often look up a surname and then ask the box to search just the surname entries for Ireland etc.).

Amongst the steady increase in family history websites for eg Towns eg Lurgan ie www.lurganancestry.net/  others are much more general for an area eg Comber via Welcome to Comber ie www.acquiweb.com/comber/forum/, Broken link

North of Ireland Family History Society (NIFHS) Charity number XR22524 ie www.nifhs.org/ is useful. Its easy to check their Members interests in case someone else is already researching your line!

I keep thinking that someone may have already traced the family.
Hope some of this is helpfull. Good hunting Jim
