Where is Unthank? Completed.

I am researching the Armstrong family of Everton, Liverpool, and the 1881 Census gives William Armsrong as born Unthank, Cul about 1848, but by 1891 his birthplace is given as Carlisle, any help appreciated.

According to www.genuki.org.uk Unthank is in Skelton  Smiley

There are two Unthanks in the Carlisle area.  One is a tiny village near Gamblesby Penrith and the other is on the A6 Penrith Road. There was another Unthank near the first one I mention but all residents contacted a plague of some sort and the village was demolished.  Jessy

There is also an Unthank near Dalston, just off the Dalston - Durdar road.

If you are that far back, presumably you have marriage certificate?  If so there will be fathers name and occupation. If so, you can request a search for the, admittedly several cos armstrong is a very common name in these parts, Wiliam with father  ***. I would go with the dalston unthank as he registered as carlisle rather than the other two which I think would have registered as Penrith. I've never done it but people seem to enquire with the local registrars so Carlisle would be the one or with Southport for a general search.
