I'm so pleased I did a search on this subject and found this thread  Smiley

My family tree is on Family Tree Legends (backed up regularly), GR and Tribal Pages.

I then have several files but with everything mixed up arghhh!

Now I am gaining more and more information...now is the time to take some of the good advice given on this thread.

Thanks

I file things very badly. Tongue  I start trying to do things logically, storing all documents of a certain type together then storing a neat little list of what I've got in Excel complete with little reference numbers so I know exactly which sheet is which.
Unfortunately my fits of organisation only last about a day before I loose interest...

I know exactly what you mean!  I have a nice wooden box file full of envelopes with  a surname on each one.

Unfortunately all the paperwork is strewn across the desk and the envelopes remain empty!!!!!

Mine are due to be done again - 2nd time in less than a fortnight

Doesn't help that I take notebook and odd bits of paper when I go to babysit for son - bits of paper end up all over the bottom of my bag and the notebook has pages and pages of scribbles that I have found but have forgotten who they belong to by the time I get to put them in the software!

Oh for better organised files etc!

AS this topic has come to light again on another thread I thought I would refresh it and add my pennies worth.
My system comprises all of the above ......... and more, I have a drop file system with the four maternal paternal names and a number of others for certificates etc, a rather large floor space which I am unable to determine the colour of the carpet on because of all the paperwork and reference material on it. I can see the top of my desk though as I have only just replaced it and have not really had the time to fill it up yet.

I will however add another query to those already asked and that is, were do you get plastic sleeves from to store Birth, Marriage and Death certificates from? If you use A4 sleeves they are not long enough to accept the certificates and you wind up with part of it sticking out the top.  Copies now seem to be shrunk down onto A4 size sheets but the originals are a bit of a problem,

any answers?

I had to fold one of the originals I have, Alan. It's from the 1890s and massive. When I had it, it had been folded up and pushed in an envelope for years, at least it isn't that bad now.

I always love this topic because I am actually organized. Not with the rest of my life, though. I have put my research into binders, based on surnames. And within the binders, I have dividers for census, certificates, correspondence, history, photos, whatever each surname needs. I used to have everything in drop files, but had a hard time keeping those organized. If I needed something from it, I would have to search through sometimes huge files. I have ten binders so far with about 6 more to do. There are a few names where I don't expect to get much information (like on my illegitimate gg grandmother's family) and in those cases I would put what little I have in the relevant binder. So, information on my illegit gg grandmother Sarah Scott, will go in the binder with her husband James Hayes.

The binders are also easy to transport. We are off to a family party in a few weeks and I will be briging along a bunch of my binders to share with everyone.
