Wow double wow.  Grin

I hope its not only me who is getting inspiration/ideas/help from all these wonderful people. I live in a 180 year old terraced cottage with 2 teenage daughters and a husband,  Roll Eyes so as you can imagine there is not alot of storage space. I like the idea of the archive boxes, but files seem to be the way to go, easily accessable etc.

I do use my Generations Easy Tree software alot I make sure all details of anything gets noted on individual files. What I am VERY BAD about is backing up Embarrassed It will be my downfall one day Cry

I have a brilliant system, it's called:    Everything On The Floor Face Up - that way I can see what I'm looking for right away - all joking aside, I must get some files and put things away        Wink and this has given me the inspiration to do it.

That's the trouble that I was facing (no storage room)when I was "ejected" along with the computer and everything that went with it from my nice cosy hidyhole as the baby (now a sturdy three year old ) needed his own bedroom. Now the stuff is doted about between two rooms hence the archival storage boxes (it also keeps it safely out of someone's way).

As for back ups I would do it now Libby (if you haven't done it already) coz you never know when something will happen and you will be cursing yourself for not up dating your back up disc's. Look at it this way. If something were to happen to your computer you will have to sit there and input all that information in again (which can be a bit disspiriting at times) where as with the back up disc its just put in and let that down load. After my last computer crash I was relieved that I had it all on disc as with over 1400 names and the information that that entailed I did not fancy sitting punching the keyboard (mind I did fill like punching some thing else when it crashed  Cheesy))

Old Rowley,

I have backed it up right now. I've only got 332 people. Mind you I must admit I've been going sideways and forwards recently. (if you see what I mean)

I know  exactly what you mean Libby, mine only go back to c1800 and the amount of people that I have on file goes from the present day and sidewards and unfortunately not backwards. Glad to see that you have now done a back up, just remember to up date it every so often (I do mine at least once a month).

I am organised with my computer records on Family tree maker which I periodically back up to CD. I also do a monthly back up to genesreunited - well you never know when the house might burn down and melt the CD!!

My storage of papers is awful though!! I have quite a large computer desk and at present can see at mountain of certificates, photos and scribbled notes!

Ah well......... no one is perfect!

I have added this note because I have now started organizing myself. Whilst busily filing the certificates, especially ones from when I very first started my research, I realized how much information I have missed from them.

The same with some of my census returns, I now have 'Ancestry' I used to have just the RG nos, and copied details. I have copied files to my files and suddenly found a relation down the road.

I was getting a bit cheesed off with my tree, I couldn't go back any further with out trips to records offices (currently not viable), but this has perked me up no end, I'm updating computer and paper records and being very thorough on my very early records. Its turning out to be very interesting 'looking with fresh eyes!'

So this is a note to all researchers 'GO BACK AND LOOK AT THOSE CERTIFICATES AND CENSUS RETURNS AGAIN'

I agree with Libby about going back over certs etc.  As I get more experienced (well, it's been a year now!) I find out more & more from them!

Hi Libby,

I felling into a system when first starting out researching pre internet and computer days and I still use it today even though I now have most of the information on a computer programm (plus on disc as a back up).

I now have some 20 lever arch files sitting on the shelves and they contain (in no order) the following,

Birth certificates............filed in family surnames and groupings.

Wedding certificates........filed in no order.

Death certificates...........Filed in family surnames.

IGI/Census Returns.......Filed in family surname order.

A File with family tree layouts filed under main surname.

A file containing all those bits and bobs headed "Miscellaneous information" this includes armed services information, samples of handwriting (I have found that it helps to have family members hand writing samples handy when trying to read past family documents and letters etc).

Four files containing copies of family photographs which I can take with me when visiting other family members which often gets more information out of those that I am seeing. The photographs are filed by family surname and groupings. By having these files it means that the orginals do not get damaged and are safely stored away.

8 files on family members which cover the 20 main family surnames that I am researching plus over family members that are connected (I class these as off shoots from the main tree). These are filed under firstly the main surname then the file is broken down to family groupings.

Lastly there are the two files containing correspondence from family members. All the letters that I receive are filed under the surname that I am researching and that which the content of the letter refers too.

Each person has their own way of doing things and I have found that the above works well for me.

Hiya organized (but knackered) Annie Grin

Glad someone has followed suit, you must let me know how you find the system and if it works ok for you. Like I said on this thread earlier it works for me and I also find it easier to find something from the files than on the computer at times. But beware the files seem to be like topsey "they just grow and grow"  Grin Grin

Hi OR !

Well it seems easy enough - I just hope I can keep it up !!  Wink
Though after all that work ...... I'd better !!  Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

I was in the middle of doing the pictures ..... I was copying them all and I ran out of ink .... so had to stop ...... muttering and cursing and swearing had to go buy more cartridges - thought I'd better get some more copying paper at the same time  .......... I've decided this organising lark gets expensive ... !! - but now I'm looking at the files all lined up like soldiers - and they look pretty cool except now - they've taken up space on my bookcase and I have to put my war books somewhere else .......... !!

Annie  Smiley

Edit ..... Thanks Steve ! - I went the bubble bath route with a little bit of Epsom salts thrown in !!  Wink
You should get that sassy Saz to do it ........... (oh excuse me - I forgot ! .... you'd have a fight on your hands !!  Grin ) I just got a feather up my "you know what" that I just HAD to get started ..... I got embarrassed when people asked me questions and I had to say "hang on till I find my piece of paper !!"  Roll Eyes Roll Eyes
