Just going through my 20 odd files and adding pictures of census and certs to the internet files.  I go through them at least every other year (one year my father's side, one year my mothers)  I thought I would print out pictures of chuches and guess what - The ink ran out!!!

It's the hidden extras that makes family history so expensive.

Hi

All my family tree work is on file at the moment, have not as yet put it onto the computer, which I should do as if anything happened to my files - god forbid, then I would have to start at the beginning again!

I keep my families together, including any certificates, maps, census records etc, and all my paperwork is in plastic pockets, it works very well for me, in fact I think it is quicker and easier to locate a specific family, than it would logging onto the computer and locating them.  When my files get too full, I split them up, normally keeping the families connected together.  I do tend to branch off sideways if I get really stuck with certain families, but only seem to go backwards, and not forwards, don't really know why. If I am interested in a certain person, I know exactly which file is which and locate them really easily.  So pen and paper for me are the best.

Janette

Get it on to computer some way or other as soon as possible.  I started putting mine on when I heard about someone who had lost everything in a fire.

I just used word processing as I thought others would beable to understand it easier and it is nice to send to the family that way but most seem to have some sort of database.  Just get it on and copy to CD then try to get a copy out of your house.  Hurry!!!

Thanks for this info, I had better start quick!!!

Been meaning to do it, but the thought of taking hours to complete the task is hard to bear, but the thought of loosing all my info, and all the years of hard work, and study would be even harder, I would be absolutely gutted to say the least.

I'm just glad I can type, should have the job done within a few weeks, could be a few days once I get cracking!!!

Thanks Janette

Wow all these brilliant ideas!
I had the great idea of four ring binders, one for each grandparent.
Grin  Grin  Grin  Grin
As I said, great idea.
Then the North Marston lot got going. All right, have to devide Gran Sarah's parents.
I had a great idea of FIVE ring binders, Great Grandfather Denchfield, Great Grandmother Emily, Grandfather Joseph, Grandfather William, Gran Harriet.
Grin  Grin  Grin  Grin  Grin
As I said, great idea.
Then I had trouble with Eliza Ann bloomin' Smith!
I had the great idea of SIX ring binders, GG Denchfield, GG Emily, Grandfather Joseph, Grandfather William, Great Grandmother Eliza Ann, and the rest of her family.
Grin  Grin  Grin  Grin  Grin  Grin
As I said, great idea......................

I have ended up with single files for GG Denchfield, GG Emily, Grandfather Joseph, Grandfather William, Gran Harriet's family........with the exception of Great Grandmother Eliza Ann, who has taken THREE folders worth of work, good certificates, bad certificates and all the help in the world to sort her out.

One rule I have kept to (for myself of course) is to copy all the cert's and original stuff, including photo's.  Then I have a file that holds all this stuff and kept safe.

We travel around alot and take the files pertaining to the area we are going to, with us.  I would be horrified if anything happened to the originals.  The marriage cert's I had laminated to protect them because of their awkward size.  I have since noticed on one of the sites that sell geneology stuff, that you can get the size of file that will hold the marriage cert's and I intend to get one at some stage.  Undecided

I have a set of files for each of the main four families and then I add to it for other branches.  Getting quite bulky in some of them now, but I have added extra files, in some cases to be able to keep relevant info together.  Quite a few files with odds and sods in as well.  I try to get all info onto the software that I use, this enables me to use a lap top when we go to various places and have all info in one place.

Because I am running ancestry's family tree software, I seem to be unable to get a sheet off that, would give me all names related, in a tree form to put in the front of the files.  So, I am now thinking of going over to the Family Tree Maker, as a rel of mine is able to do a lot more with this software.  I am hoping that a ged com will transfer over and take all the info within it, fingers crossed and all that.  Huh Huh

My problem is, I am a hoarder and throw nothing away, I really need to do some house-keeping on these files and soon.  Cheesy Cheesy

I have purchased quite a lot of bmd certificates over the last 2 years and I don't do anything with them except for file them in envelopes.

Do other people scan them in and store on CD as well?  I think they are too big for my scanner anyway.

They are only copies of the originals but they are mine, perhaps I should do something with them Undecided Undecided

What good luck to stumble on this thread. My problem is that I learn how to use the computer at the same time as I do my research. Everything that looks remotely interesting gets saved - somewhere ! My son thinks I am doing really well because of all the questions I ask. Just as well I am only doing my husbands straight line - I am stranded at 1800 - without any confusing branching out. But with the enthusiasm of all of you I find myself weakening and will do the lot.  So far I have only one folder with 3 certificates and the rest lives in a desk drawer. Will wait for the next sales to buy extra folders etc.
Have to send off an email to ask for back-up.
Oh to be an accomplished Family Historian!

morning/evening Annie,

re my visit to the National Army Museum in Chelsea, yes I did learn something. Don't take kids to London on a day out  Grin especially to this place if you what to look at the displays properly. The Museum it self was good as were the exhibits on display but you really need to either keep going back to it or have more time to really see and take in what they have on show (we did close on five hours in there). Loads of uniforms on display (ideal for research on equipment etc) plus as you would expect medals, guns and equipment.

The one thing that I found that was missing though was that they had no linkage to research into tracing soldiers etc in the army (even their shop only had one book on research and that was how to read the census) For research purposes the books on sale covered most periods of British warfare from the English Civil War to present day conflicts which was great -except that they do not stock any on Army Cap Badges, which again I thought was strange to say the least.

All in all avery good day well spent and one that I would recommend to anyone to pay a visit too.
