Hi Celia,

This is very interesting!   I'm not sure how it fits in, but at first glance I think it must!

I have been doing some research into my Hartshorn ancestors in the Dudley area.   I came up in the 1881 census with:

Sophia Danks/Head/W/Female/73/Dudley/Nail Maker
Mary A. Hartshorn/Dau/W/Female/43/Dudley/Nail Maker

They were living at 18 Salop Street, Dudley - Ref: RG11/2875/54 Page 31.

Someone then did a look up in the 1851 census for me and came up with:

Thomas Danks/Head/M/34/Iron stone miner/Dudley
Sophia Danks/Wife/M35/Dudley
Mary A. Danks/Dau/12/Scholar/Dudley
Henry Oakley/Head/M/26/Lime stone miner/Dudley
Ann Oakley/Wife/M/21/Shipston, Worcs.
Josiah Oakley/Son/1/Dudley.

Although these look to be separate families they were listed as being in the same household, i.e. St. James Terrace, St. James, Dudley.   I don't have the source reference.

The other interesting thing you say is that Samuel settled in Fulwood, York.   Now........I was born and bred in Sheffield and eventually some of my Hartshorn clan ended up there, or so I believe.   Are you aware that Fulwood is a district of Sheffield?   There could, of course, be another one somewhere in York, but I have a gut feeling about this!

I don't seem to have the brain capacity at the moment (full of cold) to sort all this out, but would be very interested in any comments you may have.

Sorry Jill, Fulwood in York as on the 1881 census was where the children of Samuel and Anna Danks were born.
The cenus place was Upper Hallam. They lived at 1 Sleigh Lea? I do have a Mary Ann danks  aged 5 on the 1851 census another sister of Samuel. No I didnt know fulwood was in Sheffield. I have only got back to my danks after an interval of 2 years a couple of weeks ago. I now have to get back to 1810. I cant see any connection with any of the danks in dudley on your census at the moment. Where does Samuel fitt in. Are you researching danks yourself? I have a cold too so know how you feel.

Hi Celia,

Oh well - perhaps not!  No, I am not researching Danks, but they seem to keep cropping up with the Hartshorns.    Obviously we have two different families here because the ages of the two Mary Anns don't tie up.

Unless you have proved beyond doubt that your family are in York, not Yorkshire, I still think you should be looking in Sheffield.   As I said, Fulwood is part of Sheffield and so is Hallam.

Happy Hunting.

Hello again Celia,

I just checked with Genuki to make sure I am not leading you astray!

"In 1822, the following places were in
the Parish of Sheffield:

"FULWOOD, a hamlet in the township of Upper Hallam, and parish of Sheffield, 3 miles SW. of Sheffield."

"UPPER HALLAM, a township, in the parish of Sheffield, upper division of Strafforth and Tickhill, liberty of Hallamshire; 3 miles SW. of Sheffield. Pop. 1,018."

http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/WRY/Sheffield/more.html

I think it is a simple error - the enumerator has put York instead of Yorks.
