1841 Census - GULLIVER

Help please; I am looking for Ellen (or Eleanor) Gulliver, who said that she was born in 1837 in Gilesgate Moor and daughter of James Gulliver. She had left home and was a servant girl in 1851.

Many thanks, I think that you are spot on; she quotes Gilligate in another census. What a quaint spelling of Gulliver? Still, with a strong regional accent and unable to read or write, who can check it?

THe missing father - James Gulliver was my 3 x gt grandfather. My line descends from Ellens brother George.

I have Ellen on the 1861 census:

I have wondered about this myself - the name gallagher is so close - but who knows?
During the 1830's/50s my own Gullivers have been variously listed as Gollopher/Goliver/Golifer/Golipher & Gallifor, with some of the same folks having different spellings for Baptisms, marriage & census. I suppose that's what happens if you rely on other people to write things down.  Roll Eyes

Sorry I haven't replied earlier but we have been away. I had picked up Ellen in 1861 and have some more detail on the Gulliver clan with all its variant spelling. Suggest we swap details - please contact.
