1861/1871 Censuses - Joseph Gibson - COMPLETED WITH V.MANY THANKS TO OLY
« on: Tuesday 07 March 06 15:39 UTC (UK) »

Looking for Joseph Gibson on 1861/71 censuses.  He is 9 on 1851 census living at home in Ottringham where he was born, but not there on 61/71.  Can't find him on 1881 census.  Could someone please check 61 and 71 censuses for me though it might be that he has died between 51 and 81 censuses.

With many thanks.

Hi Olly

Thank you very very much, especially for explaining a Rullyman (never heard of it!).  It's nice to know he survived past 1871 - I will have to go back to familysearch and try Goodwin instead of Gibson.

Could I ask you a favour.  Joseph's father's half sister married a Rawson and one of their sons was called Thomas.  Was the Thomas Joseph was lodging with by any chance born about 1827 in Hedon?  If so, looks like he was living with his half-uncle.  If you could let me know I would very much appreciate it but thank you for all the information you have provided.

With very best wishes.

P.S.  Could you explain what Bullmers Gazeteer is - not something I have come across.

Hello Zephyr

1871 Census
Thomas Rawson head M 43 Shipping Clerk b. Hedon

William son 14           b. Thongumbald

Malinda dau 5                 "
Kate dau 11 months        "

Bulmers Gazeteer is a Trade Directory of Hull listing Names Addresses and Trades that people followed much like todays Yellow Pages. Look in the Yorkshire resources files. Your man will be mentioned in a few of the Hull Trade Directories over the years being an independent business man.
I would love to know what his first vehicle was, a lovely word Rully. I think its usage is just along the east coast.

A good website for directories with a search facility, paste it into your search box, then into your Favourites.

Hi Oly

Thank you very much for this extra information.  Looks like Joseph was staying with his 'uncle'.  'Thorngumbald' is also a village where a few ancestors have been born so it's all looking good!

Have made a note of web sites and will do as you suggest and have a good look through them.  Sometimes seeing the occupation of an ancestor is more interesting than finding an ancestor.  Have checked the dictionary for Rullyman but no such luck.

Very many thanks again.

With best wishes.

Hey

I recently came across your post doing a search for Gibson. I have been doing my family tree. My Great Grandma was Alice Gibson b. 10th Sept 1882. She was born at 48 Goodwin Street. She had a twin brother, Arthur.

Older siblings George William (b.1874), Sarah J (b.1879), Alice + Arthur, Herbert (b.1884). I found Herbert's birth certificate amongst my Grandma's belongings (Mirium Blinkhorn), youngest daughter of Alice Gibson and George Arthur Blinkhorn. Herbert was also born at 48 Goodwin Street according to his birth certificate.

Until I read your post, I did not know Joseph Gibson existed and I am wondering why they lived at the same address, were they there at the same time? I know that William Gibson + Sarah Sands were living at Union Street in 1891 and 1901.

Can you confirm the parents and other siblings of Joseph and William Gibson b. Ottringham, as there appears to be two sets of Gibsons orignating from this village.

Kind regards

Hi,  Thank you for your reply. Ive not managed how to work out how to send a PM.

Thank you for all your information. Ive been and checked my birth certificates and both Alice Gibson (b.10/09/1882), her twin Arthur and younger brother Herbert (b. 11/11/1884) were all born at 48 Goodwin Street to parents William Gibson (joiner) and wife Sarah Sands. This is very odd if Joseph and his family lived at this address, for three of his brothers youngest children to be born there? I do not have certificate of the older two siblings as of yet.

I would agree that they must be brothers. By typing this I cannot see your original reply but siblings I have to William and Joseph are George, Mary Jane, James, Joseph and William. Their parents being Daniel Gibson (b.1802) and Helen. As I could not confirm which Gibsons my great great grandad belonged too, i did not go much furhter. The grave yard at Ottringham has numerous Gibsons in it also.
