Researching John FARRELLY b.c.1806 and his wife ANN or ANNIE MARY (nee BRADY) b.c.1807. They migrated to Australia, 1st recording of them in Aust. is their son Michael's marriage in 1856. John & Ann's children were, Michael b.c.1834, Thomas b.c.1836, John b.c.1838, Patrick b.c.1842, Bridget Mary b.c.1848, Peter b.c.1849 & Edward Francis b.c1851. Presume they were all born in Cavan. It is possible Ann, nee Brady, was related (a sister) to Fr. John BRADY b.c.1800 Cortober, Casteltara. There is also a Margaret BRADY born before 1800 who may fit into the Brady side. Fr. John BRADY became the 1st Bishop of Perth in 1845. He trained in Paris, and there was a Farrelly Burse there so possible this is all family connected. Also have a record of Fr.John BRADY travelling with a nephew, Farrelly on a trip to Aus. Can anyone help with tracing these families origins, or their travel to Australia.? The Farrelly's kept alternating the male names so it is quite likely that the lst John's father was Michael Farrelly. Any help appreciated.

Thanks for your input. As yet, I haven't found a Queensland connection but as I can't verify exactly where my Farrelly's are from in Cavan, I guess it's not impossible that these families are related. The Farrelly christian names are so similar. The Brady connection in Perth has been my most positive find and there is a Philip Farrelly connected there, so you never know. Your Farrelly family must have arrived about 1882 where I think mine is around 1843-1856, can't find that out either. Thanks so much for your reply, it may eventually help in some way.

hope it helps. the name is so unusual, originally I hought it sounded Italian, that there's bound to be a connection. Let me know if you get a break through.
The connection is through the SWEENEY family.

Bit of trivia for you - My Farrelly grandparents lived next door to Irish migrants around 1950's. They pronounced the name like Furley (nice Irish accent needed there). However, I had a laugh at your Italian guess, as other Italian neighbours called them Furelli's (hope you can hear that Italian accent in there). My Uncle's name was Anthony, otherwise known in Italian as Tony Furelli. The Farrelly name was often mistaken for Italian and we all had our Irish/Italian versions of our names. Just like your James & Annie, my grandparents were a Farrelly married a Smith.

You could write a book on the pronounciation and recording of Irish surnames! I have had similar problems with the McILVANEYs, KERNAGHANs, McKENNAs, SWEENEYs. The only Irish family I haven't had a problem with is the STRAINs (who are conneted to the FARRELLYs by marriage). I also have some FARRELLY family photos which were sent to me from a FARRELLY in Oz. My all time favourite is the name of my wife's gt grandmother.
Agnes SIMMONS KERMATH NICKLE. She was actually christened Agnes Fitzsimmons Kenraghan NICOLL!!
