Hi
Can anyone find a marriage record between a Frederick Marks and Emily. Frederick was born about 1847 in Whilton, Northants and Emily about the same in Flore (?), Northants. They must then have moved to Yorkshire as their first three children were born Sheffield/Shipton, the first being in 1872.
Many thanks Tracy

Hi again Tanja
You're right! Just checked the original again and I have noted Florence's birthplace down incorrectly - oops!
As he was single and at home in 1871 and married with a nine year old in 1881, they obviously got together quite quickly after the '71 census (not necessarily married I suppose). Still can't find any record in any of the obvious places.

Not too sure about this but I thought I'd throw it in: Marriages Sep 1874 Daventry registration district Emily Bottrill Frederic Charles Marks 3b 173
With: 1861 RG9/942 45 9 Floore, Northamptonshire Pricketts Lane William Botterill, head, 57, Machinist, b. Floore Sarah, wife, 47, b. Stowe George, son, unm, 26, Machinist, b. Floore Emily, dau, 14, Lace maker, b. do. Mercy, dau, 11, scholar, b. do. William C, son, 3, b. do.
but 1871 RG10/1490 71 43 Flore, Northamptonshire Bricketts lane Sarah Bottrill, head, wid, 57, Formerly lacemaker, b. Stowe Emily Pair, dau, mar, 24, formerly domestic servant, b. Floore William Bottrill, son, 13, machinist lab, b. Floore
She should have married under the name Pair, I suppose

Tanja - this is fantastic! Emily's daughter, Mercy, is fast becoming number one suspect in my search for the parents name on my grandfather's birth cert. (see warwickshire board under 'Mercy Marks' and 'Help needed Marks/Lawrence'). I posted there as another Mercy in that area that was on my list.
Basically I had three suspects; this one, one in Kenilworth and a vague one in Worcester.
This one is Mercy Beatrice Annie Marks who married in 1909 in Daventry - which meant I had discounted her once as she had my grandfather in 1905. However, as I now suspect that she may not have been married at all I am taking another look. If the name of the father on the birth cert. (Arthur Day Lawrence) was real, she may have taken a leaf out of her mother's book when she remarried and simply used her maiden name?
I am also sure that I have come across a Lawrence family from Floore - but will have to look at all my bits of paper to check (or reinvestigate!).
I have just this moment managed to locate Mercy on the 1901 Census. I had been able to find the rest of her family still in Whilton (under Wellingborough), but no sign of her. Just found her a few streets away working as a servant but using the name Annie Marks! I will now pick up on this and re-check the person she married etc. Hope this all makes sense!
I guess we can work on the basis that Emily's oldest child, Florence, was from her first husband?
This has given me a huge boost - thanks Tracy

Ha! You beat me! I was just posting to say I hadn't seen the marriage, but had found the christening when your post came through.
Good when it starts to fit though

Tracy - I'm new to this board so only just seeing things from 2006. I'm working on Marks of Whilton being married to on ein 1971 and have her tree back to William Marks b 1740 - but I know not where - suspect Brington or Buckby; not on Whilton parish records. then via Blencowes to 1660. Is your tree visible anywhere? Do you have Marks before 1740?

Hi there, i too are new to the board!! ...V interested in finding out how the Marks family of Whilton is linked to the Marks family of Milton - i have found a distant cousin (Peter Marks) recently as a result of the Milton Malsor website: www.miltonmalsorhistory.org.uk/ I haven't as yet met Peter but i know that he has traced the Marks family back to the 1600's. Fyi Peter's email address is Marksflyby@aol.com.
