Can you quote their name and the census details?   I always thought it was a convent.   Will check it out further when you let us have the details.

What year are we talking about?   My husband thinks Holy Cross was a convent combined with a girls' school which is probably your answer but I will check further when I can.

I have now looked at the 1901 census.  Unfortunately it does not say what it is but the nuns are all called "officers" and Sisters of Mercy.  The girls - who vary in age from 26 to 6 - are described as "inmates".   That does not sound like a school - more like a workhouse!    I suspect the refuge idea on that web site is the correct one.   I wonder if their records are at Lewes Record Office?

Hi

Looking at the ESRO site, the only registers they hold for Haywards Heath which is in West Sussex are

Perrymount Road Wesleyan Methodist

St Francis Hospital (Lunatic Asylum)
Deaths 1907-1951 (HC), Burials 1860-1953 (HC)

St Wilfrid Baptisms
Indexed 1865-1876, Marriages 1866-1876,

Sussex Road Primitive Methodist
Baptisms 1877-1957+, Marriages 1900-1953+, 1954-1986.

This sounds like the Convent of the Holy Cross in Bolnore Road Haywards Heath. which was opened in 1887 by an order of nuns that moved down from London. It included an Orphanage of up to 60 children from infancy to 18 when they left to go into service. the orphanage closed in 1926. The convent closed in 1980 but the order still exists in Nottingshire. My Great Grandfather George Nichols moved down from London with the convent and the Nichols family worked for them for 5 generations My Great Grandmother Sarah was Matron of the Orphanage. Hope the attached photos will be of  Dennis Nichols
