Mardol

I have a marriage cert from 1838 where the pair married in St Chad's, Shrewsbury.  Both gave their residence as Mardol (at least, that's what it looks like).  Is that a district of the town?

Hi Suttontrust

Mardol is a street in Shrewsbury, and still survives today.  It's quite a busy area with several pubs, a large health club, pizza restaurant, a florists to name but a few.

http://www.shropshiretourism.info/shrewsbury/map/zoom1/1a.htm Have a look at this map and you will see that Mardol runs from the Smithfield Road up to Mardol Head.

Here's a photo of the street http://www.darwinshrewsbury.org/darwinwalk/1 and also an explanation of the name!  If you continue to "walk forward" you'll see some good photos of several of the properties.

hello Suttontrust

I hope that you continued to "walk forward" to at least walk 12 where there is a lovely photograph of St Chads.

Sadly, no.  For both of them it just says, "Mardol".

They were Thomas Bird and Elizabeth Williams.  I know he was born in Shropshire c.1814 and she was born in Bidgnorth c.1815.  Fathers William Bird and Edward Williams.  I have their descendants but can't get any further back.

When I go to the Shropshire Archives again I would be more than happy to see if I can find out anything for you.   Let me have all the information that you have got.

Have you found them on all the Census?

...and finally....
