Darry/Cockburn in Duns
« on: Friday 10 March 06 13:27 GMT (UK) »

I'm hoping someone may be able to help me unravel my Cockburn and Darry families please.  I have already had some really valuable assistance from Rootschat members, but I still need help!
I am trying to confirm the parents of Helen Darry who was born in 1804 (confirmed by both census records and her death certificate)  I am certain she was married in 1825 in Edinburgh to Thomas Paterson (her first 2 sons were also born in Edinburgh). On her marriage records she is named as DErry with her father being George DErry (a gardener from Duns) but on her death cert her father was William DArry (a gardener from Duns)  According to her death cert her mother's maiden surname was Cockburn.  I have found a record of a baptism of Helen 31-7-1804 to William and Nelly Darry (nee Cockburn) but some of their other children are to William and Helen.  The only Nelly Cockburn I can find was born in 1788 which makes her too young (first child born 1798)

Just to confuse matters even further, I have found a record of Helen's sisters - Isabel's - death (she was married to John Walker) with her mother recorded as Margaret Darry nee Cockburn!!!

I have found some birth records for Helen Cockburn but have no way of confirming whether this is correct (and where does Nelly fit in!!)

I know this is really confusing but can anyone help me before I pull anymore hair out!!!

I think you can stop pulling your hair out! There are lots of variations on the name Eleanor - Helen, Ellen & Nelly being 3 of them. I think Helen & Nelly are the same person.

The name on the death certificate could be  a simple mistake. Deaths were registered probably by the children and they may not have known their grandmother's name, or just remembered it wrong. I once spent a long time looking for someone where this had happened. Very annoying!

Thanks for your reply - I think you are probably right about Helen and Nelly.  It didnt help when the name Margaret came up as well but you are probably right about that being a mistake as well.  If only our ancestors knew how difficult they made our lives!!!!
