Alice M Howard
« on: Friday 10 March 06 18:01 GMT (UK) »

Could some kind person look up the baptism for Alice M Howard, in the 1881 census she is aged 4 Born Norwich. I am interested in her as she is the niece of Thomas Parslow ( Beer and Wine Seller) (an ancestor) aged 48 born Kingston - on Thames and his wife Elizabeth Huh 54 born Swanton Abbott Norfolk, in the 1881 census they are all living at The Wrythe Carshalton Surrey. Before I moved to Cambridgeshire I lived in Carshalton a stone throw from The Wrythe, and for the last 15 years my daughter has livedin Swanton Abbott. I would eventually hope to find the marriage of  Thomas and Elizabeth and why Alice was living with them.
Appreciate any little help
Kaysy.

Hi Kaysy,

Do you have the family in earlier census records?  Might be possible to tie in other siblings?

Hi  Emma, Thank you for your reply.
I have the 1891 census for the family, they had moved from Carshalton to Hackney, Thomas Parslow aged 58, & Elizabeth 64, Alice M Howard aged 14. There is a possibility that Alice was living with  Thomas & Elizabeth for a reason perhaps because her mother had died. Found an Alice Howard died aged 26 in Norfolk 1879, as young Alice was born 1876/7 it could be her mother BUT of course it is only a maybe.
I sent for a birth certificate for Alice Maud Howard born July 1876 Kings St Norwich, but her mother was named Rebecca, no father mentioned.
Thanks again,
Kind Regards,
Kaysy.

Hi Emma, I agree with you, tracing Alice M Howard is going to be difficult. My daughter lives in Swanton Abbott where Elizabeth Parslow (maiden name unknown) was born and went round the church graveyard to see if they could find an Alice Howard buried there aged around 26 in 1879, they said there were many Howard's buried there, and there are still Howards in the village.  I checked on FreeBMD marriages, seeing as young Alice was born 1876/7 I added 18 years so could have been married around 1895, so many Alice Mary's, Maud's, and Maria's, very difficult, pity it didn't have what the M stood for in the 1881 cesus, made things a lot easier. she would be around 24 in 1901, so thought I would check on Alice born Norfolk, just in case she had not married, there were several but none that I thought could be her.

KAYSY.

Might be an idea to see if the village or surrounding area has a website...there may be a notice board on there where you could post details - if there are 'Howards' still in the village, maybe someone would know something?  I've done a similar thing with some of my Ancestors and have had contacts come through.

Could some kind person look up the baptism for Alice M Howard, in the 1881 census she is aged 4 Born Norwich.

Have you been able to trace a marriage for her, which shows her middle name? This would help in identifying which Alice Howard's birth certificate to order.

Finding a will for a close member of family may mention her and so help to locate a marriage.

If she stayed living in Surrey and had married by 1901, then you might possibly find her in that census by a search on forename, age and birthplace - taking any Alice who matches and then searching freebmd to see if any of them had the maiden name Howard may also identify which Alice Howard's birth you need.

The birth certificate you have located may be correct - try tracing the named mother back to see if you can connect her to the family with which Alice was living in 1881. If the mother was not married and working, she may have farmed of Alice on family so that she could get back to work.

On the information you have provided, looking for a baptism in Norwich is unrealistic because:
Number of parishes and in the city (approx 32)
Number of different churches (CofE, Methodist, Baptist, Catholic, etc)
Her birthplace may be recorded as Norwich for convenience - she may have been born in a parish near the city
She may not have been baptised at birth or in her place of birth.
She may not have been baptised at all.

Hi, Thank you for your interest in Alice M Howard, I have printed out your message so as I can study it in detail. As I mentioned I have the birth certificate for Alice Maud Howard born Kings St, Norwich born July 1876, no father mentioned, there is also an Alice Maria Howard born 4th qt 1876 Norwich, I think I will send for her birth certificate, if her mother is named Alice also, then I would know that the Alice Howard that died aged 26 in Norfolk 1879 would possibly be her mother.
Kind Regards,
Kaysy.
