Hi
please would someone who understands how Derbyshire's system works give me some advice on finding a will/admon
My ancestor Jonathan Nevill died 1783 in Ockbrook, Derbyshire.
I have checked for a will proved at the PCC & there isn't one
1) am I right in thinking that if there is a will or admon it will have been proved at Lichfield & any record will be at Lichfield Record Office?
2) if (1) is correct, is there any way of checking this without visiting the RO?
thanks in advance Rosemary

Hi Rosemary,
Unless anyone knows different, I think you're right that the will/admon will be at Lichfield if there is one - they have several large books in the reading room which are indexes of the wills they hold and you can search them freely.
Unless you can find someone who is going to Lichfield RO and who can look up your Jonathan in 1783 - shouldn't take more than 5 minutes - and give you the date of probate if it's there, you would need to contact Lichfield and ask for a search. £9.50 for half-an-hour. The address is: http://www.staffordshire.gov.uk/leisure/archives/Lichfield+Record+Office/LichfieldResearchService/
Hope that helps, John
