The dpi on my scanner goes up to 19200 - will that be too big?

I have done it at 1200 dpi and it is 390kb and at 4800 dpi it is 2.51 MB

Is it better to enlarge the smaller one or shrink the bigger one?

Anna x

PS Thank you for all your patience with me over this - I have only had the scanner since Jan and I still dont know what it does really!

try the 1200, I would imagine that the higher res' could possibly be interpolated, either way the 1200 would be as big a manification as the pic' can go.

Hi Anna

Bigger is always best! Use the 2.51 mb one.

The bigger the original scan the more you can enlarge it - just ensure that you trade resolution for 'physical' size. ie increase height/width while reducing resolution.

People often make the mistake of simply forcing up the file size to make a picture bigger, but they are simply stretching the pixels and so effectively reduce the quality.

When saving as a JPEG, try not to use a low quality setting to make a file smaller, as this is achieved by throwing away information - wasting all the effort made in the scanning process.

Oh, and always scan in colour (RGB) even for black and white pics. Again, this will contain more digital info to play with.

Have fun Grin

That is great Tomkin - I really like the way you have brought out her features - with the originall so faded I wondered whether I would ever see her again.

Anna x

What a great word 'ninny' is  Wink. Haven't heard it for years Grin

Without going around in technical circles, either scan will be fine to work with. As long as you've managed to take a tiny picture and make a decent size scan from it you're on the right road!

I don't have time at the moment, but if no-one else does it, I'll have another go later.

Hi Anna,
That makes two of us. I'm still on
Bushels and Pecks. I missed pge2 because I've left my websites on
large font and I'm too idle to change it. i.e. one click with a mouse
button, how idle is that.

Hi Anna,
Had to try a little experiment. Didn't work but a crude
colour photo resulted. hope you like it.

Gosh - she looks stunning - What a fantastic result!

I cannot believe that a barely visible picture no bigger that a stamp could result in that kind of quality picture.

You have made my day!!!
