Well here we go again. Even in 2006 they can not get the name right. One census form short on Census night so rang them and asked for another form. Had to give name and address so spelt everthing out over the phone. Surname B.I.D.D.I.S.S. Mail arrived today addressed to BIDIFF Household. At least i have a chance to change it but will anyone have access to in in 100 yrs?

Do you not spell it S for sam, not F for freddy, when spelling things out over the phone?
Thats what I do.

"Show me the way to go home ..."

Hi Carol,
The NZ census story is tragic, I'm afraid.
Recently I wrote to the minister in charge of statistics (Clayton Cosgrove) to get the final word on what exists and what doesn't. Here's the bad news:
ALL forms before 1966 were 'routinely destroyed'. 1966, 76 and 86 forms were kept and it is possible we may be able to see them in 100 years' time. No, sorry, they will be 'transferred to the Chief Archivist' after that date.
In 1996 the privacy laws came into effect and all the forms were destroyed 'as a result of ... the strong public sentiment which posed a risk to cooperation with the census'.
In 2001 people had the choice of whether or not they wanted to have their forms archived. FEWER THAN 60% OF THE POPULATION AGREED TO THIS. The authorised forms may be transferred to the archives in 100 years; the rest were destroyed.
The Department of Statistics, which administers the censuses is resolutely upbeat. They claim to have these AMAZING statistics (which we could look up) - but completely miss the point of the whole exercise from a family history point of view.
Makes you want to weep.

Maybe you Kiwis should photocopy (or scan on the computer for those who have scanners) your filled in copies of the census forms before you hand them back to the enumerator. The govt doesnt need to know that you kept copies. Your copies can be filed with other census records you hold in your genealogy files.
The same can be done for any census in any country at any time.
Thats what I would do - wish I had though to do that back in 1996 - the last NZ census I filled out.
