1861 census RG9/1000 folio 39B

Richard Barfoot Head widower 49 Tailor born Millbrook Beds
Mary A Barfoot dau Unm 29 charwoman b Ampthill
William Barfoot son unm 25 tailor b St Albans Herts
James Barfoot son unm 22 Ag lab b Ampthill
Susan Barfoot dau 14 b Ampthill
Thomas Barfoot grandson 6 b Ampthill
Emily Barfoor gr dau 3 b Ampthill

There was also another family of Barfoots, or should it be Barfeet, who were tailors as well, so it may be a family trade:
Woburn St Ampthill
John Barfoot H M 39 Tailor b Ampthill
Hannah Barfoot wife 42 b Ampthill
John Barfoot jnr son unm 18 Tailor b Ampthill
Hannah warner niece 7 scholar b Brixton Surrey

I can't find Richard and James in 1841 in Ampthill, Maulden or Millbrook.

But the other family was in Ampthill

William Barfoot 50 tailor not born in Beds
Mary 50 born in Beds
John 19 born in Beds
William 13 b in Beds

I suspect that William and Mary may have been the parents of Richard - see the IGI where there is a birth in Millbrook in 1811 of Richard son of William & Mary, which fits with his age of 49 and place of birth in 1861. There is also a marriage in Millbrook of William Barfoot and Mary Forfeit in 1810.

I think Richard Barfoot's wife was Ann Wesley - they married 24 Dec 1829 at Ampthill.

You should check the IGI findings in the parish registers, but it looks a reasonable hypothesis with a fairly unusual name.

Let me know if you need anything else

Regards

David

Dear David, thank you so much for all your trouble you are a saint, you have knocked down my brick wall and proved to me what a strange thing genetics are,for there are many family members in this present generation who have earned a crust by tailoring, without knowing anything about thier ancestors .                     Regards  Bethan

1851 census index for Ampthill - BARFOOT

Page 5:
Richard, age 39 born Milbrook
Ann, age 41 born Ampthill
William, age 15 born Hertfordshire
Page 6:
Frederick, age 13 born Ampthill
James, age 10 born Ampthill
Caroline, age 6 born Ampthill
Susan, age 3 born Ampthill

Page 27:
John, age 29 born Ampthill
Hannah, age 31 born Ampthill
John, age 8 born Ampthill

Richard married Ann WESLEY in Ampthill on 24th Dec 1829, he was born on the 2nd May 1811 and christened on the 13th Oct 1811 to William & Mary BARFOOT in Milbrook

William BARFOOT m Mary FORFEIT on the 10th Dec 1810

There are no BARFOOTs in Milbrook listed in 1851 - in Flitwick

H.J Barfoot took out a 24 year lease out on 107, Midland Road as a tailors shop & premises in 1903 - it was sold by auction in 1912

John Barfoot of Ampthill, tailor, took an apprentice from the workhouse in Jan 1869 [John Barrat of Haynes, aged 14]

These people will probably be listed in the trade directories which are on line

Bethan

I should have said that Midland Road where the BARFOOTs had their tailoring business is in Bedford not Ampthill!

Bedfordshire Archives have a search site [which, so far, lists about a quarter of their archives material but is growing].  It is worth looking at for these bits of background info.
