House of correction Brixton 1841

I have found out that my great grandfather James Rickson was in the house of correcton in Brixton Hill in 1841. How can I find out what his crime was?

Try the London Metropolitan Archives (LMA) I know they have Wandsworth Prison records (formerly the Surrey House of Correction) http://www.cityoflondon.gov.uk/Corporation/leisure_heritage/libraries_archives_museums_galleries/JAS/lma/lma.htm

Failing that do a Google search for Brixton Hill,

Possibly it might have been reported in a Newspaper at the time, - the Newspaper Library at Collingdale might be able to help.

In a lighter vein... Smiley A few years back we had a holiday in a House of Correction in Lincs. 

It was owned by The Landmark Trust, who renovate interesting & historic buildings, & let them out for holiday lets. See link below:

Thanks for your replies. It can't have been murder because he was living in Sussex in 1851, just curiosity really.

My convict ancestor was sentenced to Brixton in 1836 prior to transfer to Horsemongers Lane prison, Southwark, then to the "York" hulk before being transported to NSW.

His case was heard in the Newington Quarter Sessions and these records are held at the Surrey History Centre.  Check out: www.surreycc.gov.uk
