Me, aged 4, just starting out on The Dusty Trail

Hi Anna
In order of questioning, here's how I'd answer
1) On a good day, I can do a very basic, fairly straight-forward colouring in about an hour, if its just a plain studio portrait against a relatively plain background, but sometimes it can take maybe four or five hours to get a really detailed one done. Bad days, which are getting more common, can increase that time by several hours.
2) Totally depends on the scene. Outdoor scenes are my least favourite, because it's tricky to get varying shades of greens and browns without either going OTT or making them look too muddy. Uniforms are easier, because the colours would be pretty standard colours, but a wedding would be much more difficult to get a decent range of colours in the clothing. I'd say about four or five hours on average.
3) I tend to start with the skin layer, including the lips and eyes on the same layer. If the skin looks right, then most other things tend to fall into place quite well. I'd then most likely move onto the clothing before finally tackling the background.
4) Mostly, I tend to get each layer laid out fairly roughly, but not too roughly, so I can see the composition of the picture. I then go back and adjust each one until it looks right. I'd then flatten the image to nearly the look I'm after, and then adjust the saturation and maybe the levels to get the final look
Hope this is helpful
Glen

Hi Anna,
You are doing great - but as you have found out it can become quite addictive
As I learned most of my things (what little that is) in the past few months - you see something new all the time.
Also when you have finally finished a photo - looks great - post it - come back to it - you think, errr could I have done the skin a bit better - does that hair look too ginger - but I suppose that's what makes us all keep improving.
Just watch out for the shoulder ache - never believed in "RIS" (??) until I started doing photos
And don't look at the clock - I think each one will only take a bit to do, but they don't!!
Cheers
Keith
