Jemima Hulme, one of my ancestors, was born in the workhouse in Cheadle, Staffordshire, in April 1842. I have her birth certificate, but I can't find out why her mother, Hannah Hulme, who came from Macclesfield, was in Cheadle. Hannah later turns up in Manchester married to someone else (Zachariah Bell), with Jemima in tow and some other children too. Is anyone able to look in the 1841 census to see whether Hannah was still in Macclesfield at the time of the census? I would be incredibly grateful. Jemima
Hi Jemima Can you give any more info ie age and was Hulme a married or maiden name ? Because the 1841 is not name indexed it would not be possible for me to do a blanket search of all the thousands of pages, we need to narrow the search down a bit. One way of doing this is to look for a marriage which may give us a district.
Hi,Thanks for replying. Hannah always gives her name, on all the certificates we have (children's births, husband's death), as 'Hannah Bell formerly Hulme' so I am assuming that Hulme is her maiden name - unless she previously married a Hulme, who died, and that is why she ended up in the workhouse. In the 1851 census she is shown as married to Zachariah Bell and gives her age as 36. I have searched for marriages in the Family Records Office in London but can find no Zachariah Bells. Plenty of Hannah Hulmes, but the few I have followed up have led nowhere. I would be grateful for anything you could do. Jemima
