One very undervalued source for putting meat on the bones of ancestors is the School Register.
School registers often include details of the pupils career after leaving the establishment, here are some examples of just what may be found.
Rossall Register
Bateman, Horatio. Solicitor in Derbyshire. Died 1885
Bonham, John (1834) ; left 1848. Royal (Bengal) Artillery. Ensign in 1852, major 1872, retired hon. Colonel 1874. Severely wounded at Chinut, and served during the defence of the Residency at Lucknow, 1857 ; severely wounded Aug. 30th ; twice mentioned in despatches, medal with clasp, a year’s service, and brevet of major. Life Governor of Rossall. Ballintaggart, Grange-Con, Co. Wicklow.
b. Stokes, Henry Cosby (1868) [Sch. Ho.]; M. 1886. Fruit farming. Florida.
Sedbergh Register (1820) Bousfield, Robert, entered August, age 17; born at Orton, Westmorland; left in the same term on account of bad eye-sight. Became a farmer, and died at Gaisgill, Tebay, January 4th, 1854.
(1822) Giles, Thomas, entered August, age 13; born at Lancaster; left December, 1825. In business at Morecambe, where he speculated largely in the herring trade.

Grand Lodge of Freemasons 1922 ; m. 2 June 1872 Emily Ford ; 5s., 3d. ; d. 14 June 1925 at his residence ; 31 Lexham Gdns., W.8. q. r. 1.
