Dickson.
« on: Saturday 18 March 06 03:50 UTC (UK) »

I have this very old book which was given to the sister of my great uncle Robert Dickson in 1887 please see attachment.
He came from Drumadowney. Co. Down. I am told

I am looking for help with two questions please.

1.  Can anyone tell me if there was/is a St. Mark's Church in the Co. Down area.

2nd. The book is called Derry. A Tale of the Revolution by Charlotte Elizabeth. New Edition. (don't know what that means). Can anyone tell me if this book has any other value other than the sentimental one I have for it.

Hi Taggart009

That sounds like a wonderful book and possibly an excellent resource for us geneologists.  Perhaps you could tell us about its content sometime.  I for one am interested in hearing all about the contents of the book Wink

Meanwhile back to your query.  Check out the Placenames pages on the Ros Davies website (see link below), you will find Drumadoney listed.  Click on the link to the hand drawn townland map and you will see Drumadoney is very close to another townland call Derry.  Both are just North of Domara (2 miles)and more importantly they are just West of Ballynahinch where one of the major battles of the 1798 rebellion took place.  I guess that the revolution in the title is reference to 1798 and it deals with local peoples involvement in that rebellion.

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~rosdavies/PLACENAMES/D.htm#De Broken Link. Ros Davies' Co. Down website now here:

Don't tell me I am wrong with my wild conjecture Grin

Hello,

In answer to your questions -

1. There are a few churches called St. Mark's in Northern Ireland, but the only one I could find in Co. Down is in Newtownards. Try

http://www.stmarksonline.com

Ros Davies' site has links to churches in Co. Down.

2. This book appears to be about the Siege of Derry (now Londonderry, Co. Londonderry) which took place in 1688. I have no information about its value.

Do you know anything about why it was given to your family? If a relative was involved in the Siege, it would have historic value for your family.

Hope this helps,

hi there,
I know of a St Mark's Church of Ireland in the Parish of Dundela (East Belfast)  in the district of Down. Some of my ancestors were married there in 1921.

Hiya Val (YDB),

That does not mean Young Belfast Delinquents either Cheesy
Unlike you I do not possess a wide screen monitor Cheesy
I prefer to read conventional shaped messages.
May I suggest sending the picture to the Photograpic Restoration.
Many apologies for moaning and groaning.

The surname Dickson is a common one in the Ballynahinch area.
I will send you addresses of a couple of places that may be able
to put a value on your book for you. Looks as though I will have
to go out for a drink this evening as I have misplaced the address
of one of those collectors and valuers of rare books.

I have been searching for Drumadowney and after trying
www.seanruad.com resorted to the PRONI site. I concur
with Gary and feel the "w" is not in the name which should
be Drumadoney. The site below is St Marks at Ballymacash
http://www.lisburn.com/books/st-marks/st-marks1.htm
I thought I would have a look for Dicksons in the Ballynahinch
locality....William Steel Dickson looks an interesting fellow.

Val, it is the Rector of St Marks you need to find..if someone
has a directory for the year the book was presented by the
Rev. Charles Wm. Harding of St Marks then you will know the
answer to your query. By the way the guy was a curate at
Glenavy and later at Ballysillan Church of Ireland

All the Best, Chris

Val, I am doing my best to sort it. I have just had a word with Nonie.
Your picture was scanned. You need to go back to the place
where you saved the picture and change format. Is it jpg Huh

OK. I sent the message below to Photography. The Cavalry
should be coming to the rescue shortly Cheesy
Hiya,

Who is there to help tonight
Sharon  Keith  anyone  We are being driven squiffy by Val's wide screen.
She sent me a message at app 21.30 asking for assistance. Sorry, I am
not much good here (ie with pictures) so if you have no objection
I am passing the buck on to you.

Val, You ought to get yourself a Personal Assistant Cheesy
There I was, quietly working away looking for the
Rev. Charles Wm Harding when you interrupt the good
work with a query about the picture sizes. It looks OK now.

All the Best, Chris

Hi Val and Chris
Back to Drumadowney, if you check out www.multimap.com just north of Dromore (see link below if it works) and really zoom in.  You will see that there is a house named called "Church View" but there isn't a church in the area any longer!  Could that be the church in question?  You would need to check it out on he ground.
I agree with Chris that finding the Rev Harding might reveal more.
(The detective side of geneology is one of my favourite parts Grin)
