To my knowledge, the Glasgow police are very helpful - especially to Highlands and Islands folk (or descendants)

Until very recently my only acquaintance with Police north of the border was a rhyme my dad used to torture me with, about the Leith Police!  (I am sure you are familiar with it!)

Hi MarieC
The gorbals is , or was the district into which the tobacco barons moved on the south side of the Clyde when Glasgow began to expand into a city. As they moved to bigger and better houses outside the city the Gorbals became an overcrowded, poor area with a terrible reputation for violence, reaching its height in the 1930's & 40's. Conditions were awful. The housing overcrowded and run down. It was finally pulled down and completely re-built in the 1960's but the highrise flats and high density housing which replaced the tenement buildings are now being demolished too and lower density houses built instead.
It was an area that required a lot of policing in the past and the police headquarters were built on the edge of the area. As the population density was reduced it beacame a much pleasanter area to live in. Unfortunately its tough reputation has lived on well after the original cause has been removed.
Don't know if a potted history was what you wanted?
In the 1960's police had to be about 5 feet 10 or 11  inches tall to be accepted into the Force. Many of my friends from the Highlands and Islands joined because they were tall, sturdy lads and made excellent 'bobbies' because they were usually amazingly calm and unruffled, and slow to anger.

Thanks Russell for the info on the Gorbals. Doesn't sound a nice place to be around the time my Donald would have been there. Wonder how long he stayed in the force.  Huh
I have emailed the police museum so I will keep my fingers crossed.  Maria

The police don't keep any records. They are at the archives at Mitchell Library.
I have just recently been in touch with them at

archiveatgcl.glasgow.gov.uk

You can obtain a complete Police record of your family member for 10 pounds stg.

Hi Wini

I am sorry to contradict you, but in this case the information about Police archives comes from a police historian and I trust him implicitly!

What area are you searching for your police ancestor?  Maybe he can help you with further information?

kind regards, Arranroots  Wink

p.s. you need to modify the e-mail address (put [at] instead of @ ) - this is Rootschat policy.  Smiley

Hello Arranroots

I first contacted The glasgow Police Heritage Society who informed me that all records were kept at the Mitchell.
I have had a reply from them confirming they have the records. they have most of the Glasgow police registers although the earlier they are the more incomplete.
They have a complete recrd of my Grandfather wwho joined in 1901.

Arranroots,
Should have checked the previous message. Spelling errors are typographical not bad spelling.
Have changed email,
Probably stuffed up the password. Can never remember
