Hi Frank
Did you ever find out anything more about your Cowxes? I see from the censuses that your elusive William turns up in the 1861 census at Bassenthwaite in the same house as his widowed sister Sarah Slater and her children, still unmarried. As he is listed there as a commercial traveller, I should have thought he is indeed the William Cowx found by Ange in Middlesbrough, also as a commercial traveller, in the 1851 census, and that "Carlisle" there is a mistake.
I can't find your John b. 1804 in either 1841 or 1851, even though I have also looked for him as John Cox and John Cowse (which I know is an alternative spelling of the name).
My own tree has, in case this information is of any use to you, an Ann Cowx born Crosthwaite in 1854, who married an Isaac Cartmel; their first child was a William Cowx Cartmel or William Cowse Cartmel (b. 1888).
