Methinks our Mary Ellen...was trying to be younger than her age and poor James maybe trying to keep up appearances? 3 documents and three different ages... Seems she should have written it down though! James death date matches the earlier... Note that the two also had different mothers... I checked again and no sign of Barff on 1881 census in Canada anyway...
but here is John in the 1871...religion...Anglican... of course.... BARFF , JOHN
Sex: Male Age: 45 Birthplace: ENGLAND Religion: Church of England, Anglican Origin: ENGLISH Occupation: LABOURER District: TORONTO WEST ( 046 ) Sub-district: St. Patrick's Ward ( C ) Division: 3 Page: 21 Microfilm reel: C-9970 Reference: RG31 — Statistics Canada

Here's a death registration for
Thomas S. Barff Date of Birth: Dec. 8 Age: 71 years Married Occupation: Bookbinder Place of Birth: Montreal, PQ (Quebec) Father: John Barff, England Mother: Ellen O'Connor, Ireland Informant: Mrs. Barff, wife Address: 6 Stanley Ave., Toronto Date of Death: Sept 21, 1930 Cause: Myo-carditis At Place of Death: 20 years, Province: 60 years Buried: St. Michael's
I think the Catharine Barff who is the witness on Arthur's wedding is this Thomas's wife.

J.J. Tip for pasting from 1901, when you've found your person, on the right in the age box there is a little white paper, right click - copy link location - paste Who did you find in 1901, James and Mary Ellen? ~Denise
