Looking for Hugh Alexander Lynn's family
« on: Monday 20 March 06 17:32 UTC (UK) »

Hi all.  I am looking for my great uncle's family.  This is the info I have found so far about him:-

He was born on 20th July 1890, Belfast.
His parents were William Henry Lynn and Jane Jellie.
Their children were - Agnes, Hugh, Bell, Thomas, Jim, Sarah and William.
The address in Belfast was 100 Dover Street, Belfast, Co Antrim, Northern Ireland.
Hugh Alexander joined the Canadian Over-seas Expeditionary Force on 16th January 1917.
Hugh had served for 9 months (1916) 21 Co.
Hugh's address in 1917 was 2606 Wark Street, Victoria Road, British Columbia.
I think he married Olive Florence Zala on 1922.10.03 at Victoria BC. I think they had 2 children.
As far as I know he was a Fire Chief but unfortunately I have come to a dead end and don't know where to look for further information on Hugh or his family.

Hugh's brother Thomas, is my grandfather.

Many thanks everyone.

http://www.bcarchives.gov.bc.ca/textual/governmt/vstats/v_events.htm#indexes - Hugh Alexander Lynn and Olive Florence Zala's marriage is here, as well as Olive's death, Feb 15 1979 in Victoria.

http://www.raogk.org/bcolumbia.htm - you could try and get an Obituary for her.

http://gateway.uvic.ca/spcoll/Mil/Oral.html - an interview 'recorded on original sound cassette 1984, Veterans Hospital, Memorial Pavilion, Victoria, B.C.' (if he died after 1984 he won't be on the BC death indexes)

Quote
Born in 1891 in Belfast (died in 198-). At fourteen years of age he began five years of employment with a pawnbroker. Emigrated to Victoria, B.C. in 1910. His first job was sweeping the streets, but through a lucky meeting he obtained a job as a (horse) driver with the Victoria Fire Dept. Through a friend he learned to drive a motor truck and, when war came, was quickly accepted into the Army Service Corps as a motor driver. Spent much time delivering trucks to the French Army in the Jura Mountains, a long drive across France. Anecdotes: leave in London, driving experiences, his love for his favourite Fire Dept. horse, Mike. Explains that people used to gather to watch the Fire Dept. training sessions when the horses were put through their paces. Describes a race between horsedrawn fire engines and fire trucks. The horses always won over a short distance. He repeats his story of truck driving in France. After the war he returned to the Victoria Fire Dept. where he worked for forty years. Mentions that he knew Emily Carr casually, as a neighbour.

Well done Jorose! That recording find is genealogy GOLD!

How very exciting...My brother used to stay with Zalas when he was in the forces stationed there...Wonder if it was the same family, but we've lost touch!

May just be a coincidence but if his son Hugh had the same middle name...

Emily Carr was a Canadian artist of note!

Hard to search for family born so far into the century...but just having this posted on Rootschat may help find searchers with more information...

Hi Jorose

Many thanks for your help.  I really appreciate it.  I now know it is definitely my side of the family as Hugh worked in a pawnbrokers with this brother Willie before going to Canada.

I will keep hunting.  Many thanks again and I will try the websites you have given me.

Take care.

I forgot to say welcome to rootschat...Hopefully you have some questions going
further back and can enjoy some of the other boards on this forum. Yes, I regret
that we didn't keep up the contact with the Zalas...It would not surprise me if
this would have been one of her aunts...
Victoria is such a beautiful place...only got there once and stayed with the hospitable Zalas.

Jorose gave good advice on asking someone at acts of genealogical kindness to
get you an obit. If anything, they only charge for gas...and if they live nearby
perhaps won't charge at all...

Then, armed with more names you might find a living relative to contact...then you can use  http://findaperson.canada411.ca/...

There are still a few Zalas listed, but it would be harder to go that route
unless they really knew the family history...One never knows though...
