The George Butt I was talking about on the 1871 census was aged  28 therefore a possible birth year of circa 1843, birth Chelsea. So he would be a possible for the son of George and Elizabeth, George born Chelsea birth registered 1845. I was looking for the family in 1861 and the only possible sibling I found for James was in 1871 - George in Shaftesbury. His wife was a widow on the 1881 census.
George senior on the 1851 census was a stone mason's labourer, not an engine driver. James (and possibly brother George were engine drivers).
Men of a previous generation didn't ususally become engine drivers - a very new technology in the 1860s when George senior born in rural Wiltshire, if he was still alive would have been in his 40s. Unusual but not of course impossible to switch from stone masonry to engine driving.
