William Archer claimed his birthplace was Devizes and he was born around 1782.  We've been through the Wiltshire FHS cd-rom of transcripts for the area with a fine toothcomb (having previously checked a number of the original registers for the area) and not found anything that ties in.
 
William migrated to London some time before 1807 when he married at Westminster St Martin in the Fields.  He died in 1859, so the only clue to his birthplace is on the 1851 census.  He was a builder, and either he or his son became a master builder and one of them allegedly was given the freedom of the city of London (this has yet to be confirmed but is a family rumour). 

If anyone is researching Archer in the Devizes area, I'd be interested to hear from you.  It's possible that William was born there but was baptised elsewhere but where is the mystery!  Any help/suggestions appreciated.

This could be Williams parents, St James's is the Parish Church in Devizes.
