Hi Cazza,

Well, it probably doesn't help narrow it down all that much, but in 1881 photographer Thomas Jones was living at 51 Upper Broad St, Ludlow with his family.  Thomas was 44, born Stafford.

I wonder whether there is any significance in the difference between the address Broad St (on the back of the photo) and Upper Broad St (1881 census).  Perhaps the name of the street was changed at some point, which might help pin down the date more closely.

Edited to add: Thomas was still at 51 "Broad St" and still a photographer in 1891...and already there (also "51 Broad St") as a photographer in 1871.

not much help really but I would stab at being between 1870 and 1885. The bowler would most possibly have been black with a grey banding- a high upstanding stiff shirt collar- a silk neck cloth (possibly black)- and cut and style of jacket all point me to this date span.

Hi,
I have just come across this post. Thomas Jones was one of my great grandfathers. He was running the studio as early as 1860. By the 1881 census it was called Upper Broad Street  but on 1891 it was back to Broad Street. To me the photo looks 1870-ish .

Thanks very much for the information.  1870s fits very nicely with the person I think "Uncle William" may be.  What a shame your Gt Grandad didn't keep his records!   Grin
