I have ancestors born in both of these areas.  Can you tell me if there are any Bambrough's listed there?

Thanks for looking this up for me

Hi
Welcome to rootschat.   I am not quite clear what you are looking for.  Which monuments are you referring to?   Can you give full names and dates for your ancestors and then someone local may be able to help you.   Cleveland Family History Society may be able to help too.

I am referring to one of the options found on this site, which I pasted below.  When I clicked on the option to request a look-up from this source I came to the message board where I posted my message.

Here is the post I responded to:

I have MI for the above . I have also spent some time recording the gravestones with digi camera so could provide a picture also.
note.. eston is only the old part of the cemetery.

Ah.  The posting has gone on the general Yorkshire board but with luck the correct person will pick it up and answer it.   If you do not get a response after a couple of days it might be an idea to send a personal message.  That is an option if you click on the square photo bit under the name of the rootschatter.  I hope you are successful.

Hi,

It was my posting that you refer to.

There is a Bambrough in Ormesby Churchyard.

Sacred to the memory of James Bambrough
son of James and Mary Bambrough of
Sunderland
who died August 20th 1845

I haven't a pic but I can pop down and see if the stone is still there ( I have a map of the graves so it wont take long )

There are non at Marton or the old burial ground at Eston.

although there is a Thomas on the 1840 Tithe map of Marton and in the 1851 census for Marton

Thanks for that.

Is there any other information about this James?  Date of birth, etc.   I two have a James Bambrough on my family tree from that area.  I have a James born 1809, and his father who was also a James.

I wonder if this is the grave of the father, but he was married to a Sarah Greear/Greerer.  So, what is really throwing me off is Mary Bambrough of Sunderland.

Any insight you can reflect on this would be appreciated, and it not too much trouble, a picture would be good.  I live in Canada, and the forseeable future does not allow for a trip to England (someday).  I don't know anything about that area except that my known family tree starts there.

Thanks,
Sheri

I made a mistake in my earlier post,

James appears in the 1851 tithe list and 1851 census for Marton , Thomas is in just the 1851 census.
James is 70 in 1851, Thomas 39. ( james is a farmer of 10acres , Thomas an Ag Lab ) you can check the 1851 at ancestry.com there are some Bambroughs there ( one born abt 1809 in County Durham )

There are no other dates on the stone, I don't know the condition so there might have been something else. also the gravestone next to this is a Greear ( 7yr old )

I suppose you really need to see the parish records for Ormesby and Marton. They are at the Teesside Archives, the Marton records are transcribed but I'm not sure about the Ormesby ones. I'm not planning to go there just yet but you could try rining them, I'm sure they will look at transcriptions not sure about films.

Can you tell me what a tithe list is?  Is it a list of parish members? Also, any idea what occupation an Ag Lab is?

Do you have contact information for Teesside Archives in that area – possibly a website/e-mail with an address.

I do appreciate your help with all this.

The Tithe map is a listing and map of who owns land , who occupies it and how big is it.  they were  made to move the tithes to a monetary value instead of a tenth of the produce of the land.
Tithes were paid to the owner of the land, which in many cases was the church. At Marton the major land owner was Bartholomew  Rudd .I've attached a photo of part of the Marton one.

I have a transcript of the names and field sizes that go with this map as well

An Ag Lab is shorthand that you will see used a lot and it means an Agricultural Labourer

In the Tithe map above James Bambrough was in the house numbered 234. at this time he is not down as having any other land but in the 1851 census he is down as having 10a. There were a several people in the Marton Parish who owned land but didn't farm it themselves.

234 is in the row that is on the main road near the field marked 199
