I've posted a request for help on another genealogy forum and had no response but I know how helpful people on here are, so hopefully someone can help. Marion Rennie(born Alva, Stirlingshire, Scotland in 1822) married William McIntyre(also born in Alva in 1822) in Alva in 1843.They emigrated immediately to North America. I have found Marion buried in Kincardine Cemetery, Bruce County in 1877. A 1999 post on another forum states that they came to Ontario and then to Buffalo N.Y. and William died in 1899. I am trying to locate them in any census to establish what children they had. I couldn't find them on Ancestry.com. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Elisabeth

Hi Elisabeth,
There is a William McIntyre on the 1871 Census, born c1823 in Scotland living in Kinloss, Bruce South. His occupation is a sawmiller. It's just list's heads of household so you would have to look at the original to see who else is living there. Mircofilm #C-9934, page 90.

Thanks, Karen. I'd found that entry, but was hoping for something earlier as I don't suppose many of their children would still be with them 27 years after they emigrated and I don't have access to a local LDS library. Am I right in assuming that the chances of finding records of births before the 1860s are slim?.I really don't know where else to look-this is my first venture into Canadian records.

Ontario registered births start at 1869, deaths 1869 and marriages 1858.
Do you think perhaps any siblings of William or Marion came to Canada as well?
I found a death registration for Marion McIntyre born Scotland c1823, died in Bruce County, but the date of death is November 10, 1890.
Do you think any of their children stayed in Bruce County or did they shuffle off to Buffalo with the father?

None of Marion's siblings moved out of Alva. Her brother was my great great great grandfather. Marion's widowed mother had 2 illegitimate children(by different fathers) living with them in 1841. I don't know about William Mcintyre's family. Someone very kindly checked the cemetery records for Kincardine cemetery" McIntyre, Mrs. Marion, Kincardine, D. April 30 1877, 54 years, native of Moa(!), Sterlingshire, Scotland, emigrated to America May 31 1843, wife of William McIntyre. B1. A. , lot 30". Wouldn't it have said Canada if that was where they emigrated to?. I wonder if that forum post in 1999 got it the wrong way round and they started out in Buffalo and then moved to Canada. Maybe I'm looking in the wrong country's census records! Elisabeth

Hmm, that's strange about the 2 Marion McIntyre's.
Well, you couldn't blame them if they left Buffalo for Canada, sure it's the Queen City, but wouldn't want to live there (my best friend lives in Tonawanda, so I can say that )
Have you checked the Canadian census for them? What are some of the names, perhaps they passed them on, quite a few McIntyre's in Bruce County.

I tried every variation of McIntyre I could think of in the various Canadian census years. Most of the right age came from Ireland-I didn't realise there were so many Irish Mcintyres. I couln't find a Marion and William from Scotland together. All Marion's family stuck to the Scottish naming pattern for children- first son should be Donald after William's father, first daughter Isabella after Marion's mother, next son James after Marion's father, next daughter Janet after William's mother, then a William and a Marion. The maiden name of Marion's mother might get put in as a middle name-it was Dawson. Thanks for your help, Elisabeth

No go with that birth-they're on the 1881 census for Bruce County Donald MCINTIRE 47 born Scotland Farmer Ann Jane MCINTIRE 33 born Scotland Isibella MCINTIRE 9 born Scotland Donald Geo. MCINTIRE 7 born Ireland Hugh M. MCINTIRE 5 born Ireland John Alford MCINTIRE 3 born Ireland
That means Donald was born in 1833
