I have wanted to ask this question for a long time.According to the county boards there is a Warrington in Lancashire.There is also one in Cheshire,To me Warrington has always been in Liverpool. On the border of Chehire,I once put on a mail that warrington was in liverpool.Someone corrected me and said it was in Cheshire (No one told me it had been moved  ).Warrington in liverpool is still on the boarder,so can you please tell me where warrington in Cheshire is  This is very confusing (even to me ) If anyone were to ask me on the Cheshire board about Warrington i would direct them to the Lancashire board. So what board would a person put a request on, Lancashire or Chesire Has it got something to do with before and after years

its the other way round Warrington is in Liverpool (on my Wall map  ) right next to runcorn. Now let me and all the other members suffering from conffusioniytis get this right.If we want a census or a birth looking up in warrington between (as in)1851-1901 we put it on the Lancashire board? So where does the 1841 census go?No that cant be right because warrington was in Cheshire first See back to square one Any questions about warrington after 1901 go on the Cheshire board right
Just for the record i have lived in Cheshire and Merseyside but i now live in Wirral thats only since around the 70's.Next stop Wales So there you have it you know who/you put it on the Lancashire board.

I hope Peter won't mind my butting in here, but I think you will find that the answer is to do with Registration Districts.
At the top of the county boards, the registration districts are listed. You will find Warrington listed for Cheshire AND for Lancashire. You will also find Farnham listed for Hampshire AND Surrey.
When these registration districts were set up, based upon the Poor Law unions, the powers that be ignored county borders. Some registration districts include parishes from another county. Warrington (and Farnham) is an example. If you check out the Genuki entry for Warrington registration district here
you will see that it says "Mainly in Lancashire but included parts of Cheshire".
These cross border districts can - and do - create an awful lot of confusion.

Hi All, but mainly Celia.
Warrington over the years has been in both Cheshire and Lancashire (Lancs from the boundary changes of 1976) BUT Celia it has NEVER been in Liverpool, its close though.
For Census
The map below shows the Warrington Council districts as they are today, any township within the red boundary line is generally included in Cheshire for Census purposes. All the others are Lancashire Census districts.
For BMD
If the B,M or D you are looking for was registered in any district of Warrington it will be included in the Cheshire BMD. http://www.cheshirebmd.org.uk/
Why ? because the boundaries have changed so many times but for most of the years of civil registration Warrington was Cheshire it was deemed easier to transcribe the books as Cheshire rather than trying to do the impossible and separate out all the names from various years and districts.
For BMD parish registers indexes Prior to 1837 (civil registration)
Only the areas within the red boundaries are included in Cheshire Indexes, all others are classed as Lancashire.

Why i put Liverpool i haven a clue, i should have said Lancashire.With all these boundary changes it's no wonder people living overseas get confused.Wirral was until quiet recently in Merseyside, previously in (Cheshire)which was O.K apart from the fact that it hitched us to Merseyside itself which is divided by the River Mersey.This was for political reasons i believe.
This caused no end of problems even with the welsh, if you lived in Merseyside you automatically lived in Liverpool So Eventually (under pressure from the public.Again renamed, to wirral,Now everyone who lives in Wirral are snobs. When i lived in Merseyside the first thing my daughter said to me on my first visit to oz was"don't tell anyone you live in Merseyside" because they think Liverpool IS Merseyside

Why didn't I think of that?The screen is quite clear now,don't have to ask me dog to read it to me!
I was under the impression that both sides of our beautiful River Mersey were classed as Merseyside,even Birkenhead,all the way to Manchester in some peoples thinking!
Then there's Monk's Ferry,but we won't mention that while theres young people listening ay??
