Hi I am in the middle of tracing the family of William Rarity born 1855 and married to Elizabeth Chattie in 1880 for my mum.
I would appreciate any information as I have found a few Rarity,s from Kirkliston and I am trying to link them together.

Hi andy,
Welcome to Rootschat!
I couldn't find your William and his wife Elizabeth in the 1881 Cencus.
I found another William, living in Broxburn, who was born in Kirkliston who would be round about the right age for having a son born in 1855?
Census Place: Uphall, Linlithgow, Scotland
William RARITY, age 56, Birthplace: Kirkliston, Linlithgow, Scotland Rel: Head, Occ: Surfaceman Ry
Elizabeth RARITY, age 69, Birthplace: Abercorn, Linlithgow, Scotland Rel: Wife
George RARITY, age 7, Birthplace: Abercorn, Linlithgow, Scotland Rel: Grandson, Occ: Scholar
Then there's this family:
Dwelling: 12 Back Street Census Place: Burntisland, Fife, Scotland
George RARITY, age 25, Birthplace: Kirkliston, Linlithgow, Scotland Rel: Head Occ: Carter (Railway)
Agnes RARITY, age 21, Birthplace: Kirkliston, Linlithgow, Scotland Rel: Wife Occ: Carter (Railway) Wife
Agnes RARITY, age 11 m, Birthplace:Burntisland, Fife, Scotland Rel: Daur
Could this George be William's younger brother? (Son of the above William?)
And then there was a Mary . . . .
Dwelling: 74 High Street Census Place: Burntisland, Fife, Scotland
James MORISON, Widower, age 88, Birthplace: Burntisland, Fife, Scotland Rel: Head Occ: Retrd Baker
Grace W. MORISON, Unmarried, age 55, Birthplace: Burntisland, Fife, Scotland Rel: Dau Occ: Housekeeper
Mary RARITY, Unmarried, age 31 , Birthplace: Kirkliston, Linlithgow, Scotland Rel: Serv Occ: Gen Serv
Could Mary be the elder sister of George and William?
In the first family above, George Rarity age 7 is listed as being the grandson of William and Elizabeth, so, who's son is he?
It's a bit unlikely that he's the son of family number 2 (George and Agnes) as Agnes is listed as only being 21.
Is there any possibility he could be Mary's illegitimate child?
I also think it would be a bit unlikely for him to be the missing William and Elizabeth unless they had him in 1874, 6 years before they married.
Is it possible your dates are mixed up and family number one, above, is who you are looking for?
Your best option is probably to check for dates of birth and marriages on Scotlands People www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk. It's a pay per view site but you can view or download certificates for Births 1855-1905, Marriages 1855-1930 and Deaths 1855-1955.
Good Luck!
Anne

Anne thanks for your reply I am just back from register house and so far I have traced my mums relatives (Rarity) back to kirkliston. The William Rarity you have in Broxburn was the father of William Rarity born 1855
He Married an Elizabeth Chattie in 1843 and died at 84 in Edinburgh in 1909 Elizabeth died in 1887. I have got all the marriage certificates from my granddad William born 1909 right back to William who died in the same year. On his death certificate it confirms his wife was Elizabeth Chattie and is mum and dad were George Rarity and _____ Ms Rutherford (it does not mention his wifes Christian name)
I have also a pile of family's from around Kirkliston and I am now in the process of trying to tie up who was related to whom.
Thanks for again for the info Ann and if you want to contact me directly you can mail me to (*). I have also made up a lot of family groups sheets in word format to help me sort it out. I have just mailed a copy on CD of these plus all the birth/death /marriages and census documents to my mums second cousin who I found on the web so if you want a copy give me a shout.
Andy

Ann just to add
William and Elizabeth (chattie) so far had 3 sons Thomas David & William The 1881 census shows George 7 living with them then in 1891 Agnes 45 George 17 living with William 67 as Elizabeth died in 1887.
William died in Leith Edinburgh in 1909 at 84 he had a Leith address but also a a Glasshead cottages Kirkliston. As Thomas registered the death me thinks the Leith address was his.
As for the George from fife that could be interesting when it comes to connecting the families up

Hi further to my first mail about looking for the rarity,s I have the death certificate of William Rarity aged 84 in 1909. Now I would have thought I would have found his birth around 1825 but no joy also his parents are recorded as George Rarity and ? Rarity (Ms Rutherford).
I cannot find the birth of William or the marriage of George.
Anybody have any tips on my next move

Hi Andy,
Glad to hear you've found something more solid to go on.
You might never find William's birth, his parents may never have bothered to register him and if that's the case, they might not have registered the birth of any other children either.
Probably the best thing to do next is try and trace him back through the various cencus returns on S.P. I don't think 1841 is available just yet but hopefully, that would be the one where you'd get info (if any) about possible siblings.
Good Luck!
Anne

What a wonderful thing the 1841 census. I checked it out and yep I found William b 1828 and Thomas b1831.
Everthing has now clicked together and all the family groups are now falling into place. It looks like Williams son Thomas got it wrong when he registered his death as he said his grandparents were George Rarity and ? Ms Rutherford.
Thomas was born in 1852 and his grandad David died in 1849 so 60 years later he is a bit confused. This could be because when he was growing up his dads older brother George was is about 10-12 years older than his dad William.

Hi Andy
It seems we share the same great great grandad, William Rarity! He was my granny's grandad. Her name was Jessie Rarity (b. 29 Dec 1890 with older siblings called James, Helen, Elizabeth, William and Alexander). She was the youngest of William's son William's children. Let me know if you'd like more info on this branch of the Raritys.
I've ground to a halt at Elizabeth Chattie (wonder if she was chatt(y) by nature as well as by name . . .). I have Elizabeth dying on 1 Dec 1887, with William dying much later, on 5 Feb 1909 at North Fort Street in Leith (literally a stone's throw from my office in Giles Street), the home of his son Thomas who was my great grandad William's elder brother - Thomas was born c. 1853 and my great grandad William was born on 11 Apr 1855. The census records show our great great grandad to be at least ten (in some instances thirteen) years younger than his wife.
My great grandad William's birth certificate is interesting as it is one of the type that shows more information than most. It says that William was William and Elizabeth's eighth child. Of my great grandad William's seven older siblings, there were four boys and three girls. Two boys and one girl had died by the time of William's birth so he had two older brothers and two older sisters still alive. I've found names for some of the siblings - there was Agnes, David and Jane - from the census returns but others must have been born and died between the years the censuses were taken.
I'll see if I can get any further with the Raritys by discounting George and trying David which would seem to be a bit of favourite name in the family - though nowhere near as popular as William.
What I really want to do now is get a bit further with the Chatty family - it's such a great name. I have Elizabeth's parents as Thomas Chattie and Agnes Chapman but that's it. I see that your last post was in May so I wondered if you'd any success on this front?
I've only being doing my family tree for about three weeks and I'm absolutely addicted! If I come across anything else that might be useful to you, I'll let you know.
Your cousin many times removed, Patricia x

Hi Patricia I wish you had contacted me earlier as I managed to trace the Raritys right back to1722 I have over 350 ( I think) and yes it might be chattie or chatty you must remember people the could not count let alone spell as you would have seen with Elizabeth chatty her age was all over the place in the census.
I have already found my mums 2 2nd cousins in Aussie land. I made them up a cd with the family tree , copies of census, birth, death certificate so you are welcome to a copy.
By the way my mum Margaret Rarity is the great great granddaughter of William via his Son William his son Alexander and his son William (my granddad)
Also as for the chatties I got some info from a guy called Howard who was looking into that side of the family. I will check to see what I have

Hello again
Yes, the different spellings can send you off on the wrong track. Today I found some evidence that Thomas Chattie's surname might be a corruption of Shatton (you can understand why they might want to change that!). However, the fact that, during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, they tended to stay round about the same place helps a wee bit
I'd really appreciate a copy of the CD you've compiled - thank you for offering it.
I'm not too au fait with this posting malarkey. I see you're not encouraged to put your e-mail address on posts but presumably there's a way consenting folk can exchange e-mail addresses?
I'll see if I can get some photos of my granny scanned in exchange for your CD. She died in the early sixties and I can only just remember her.
Patricia

Hi Andy I too am searching for the Rarity's. I was born Agnes Brown Rarity to James Taylor Rarity & Annie Morrison Brown. My grandfather was William Brodie Rarity of Dumfries, he had 8 children with Elizabeth Anderson Taylor. My grannie Rarity lived at Rutherglen intil the 1980's. My aunties still live at Rutherglen. Maybe there is some connection

Hi Agnes It looks like you are related to the west coast Raritys. As I am from Edinburgh I have managed to trace most if not all of them who lived in Edinburgh Leith then Crammond and Kirkliston. Sorry I have no record of your crowd. But if you need the my info I will be happy to drop it on to CD and post it out to you. I am now trying to flesh out the info I have so as you will understand it is a ongoing project.
regards Andy
