Hello Martin,
I don't really research Ferriers, my main interest is the connection to Meldrums but I have collected a little info on the family of Gibson Ferrier and Elizabeth Meldrum as below. Naturally, I am always happy to hear from Ferrier's who may connect ....
Gibson FERRIER - (c. 1816 - 28th September 1847) No birth certificate/OPR found.
Gibson married Elizabeth MELDRUM, daughter of Thomas MELDRUM & Elizabeth PIRIE, in Ferry Port On Craig, Fife on 27 Jun 1839.
He died in Dundee where he was employed as a Clerk in the Wallace Foundry there. He died intestate but according to his inventory, Elizabeth inherited 211 pounds and 13 shillings (sterling) - 61 pounds and 13 shillings being the value of his Household Furniture, Bed and Table Linen, Wearing Apparel and Watch and the other 150 pounds, the result of 2 life insurance policies that he held with the Scottish Widows Fund.
Elizabeth was born on 26 Jan 1814 in Dundee, Angus. She died of syncope, aged 72 in Newburgh, Fife on 23 Mar 1886.
They had 4 children, John, Thomas, Gibson and Eliza Ferrier.
Shown on the 1841 census as living at Cotton Road, Dundee, Angus (P-282 D-90 F18 P9)
Gibson Ferrier, aged 25, a clerk born Outside Census County I.e. Not born in Angus Eliza Ferrier, aged 25, born in Angus John Ferrier, aged 1, born in Angus Cathrine (sic) Ferrier, aged 60, an Independent born Outside Census Country
Catherine FERRIER born c. 1781 I presume to be the mother of Gibson. His father may have been a John Ferrier as per SNP, although nothing found for a John and Catherine in the right time period.
regards,
Lindsay

must confess I didn't think the dicrepancy over gibsons birth was unusual. This is what I have of that family. Let me know if you have any errors/additions.
Martin
You may well be right, seems likely - all other census info in Scotland for Gibson shows him to have been born in Dundee, Angus/Forfarshire. IGI has an extracted record showing his birth on 5th Jan 1844 in Dundee so probably the 1881 is incorrect.
Child #1: Ferrier John pn[4858] Sex M (-1840-) Birth: Scotland Christening: 1840/APR/8 Dundee,Angus,Scotland Census: 1871/APR/2 Age:31 Clerkenwell,London,England, Condition=U, Address=21 Gt.Percy Street, Occupation=Commercial Clerk, Age=31, Birthplace=Scotland
John FERRIER - Born on 8 Apr 1840 in Dundee, Angus.
In 1871, John was a lodger at 21 Gt. Percy Street in London, along with his brother Gibson. His occupation is shown as Commercial Clerk (Russian Merchants) and he was unmarried.
In 1881, he was living at 32, Lancaster Road, Kensington, London, an unmarried Merchant, aged 41 and a boarder with the Straturaun family. I think it is coincidence that an Eliza Wilson, aged 19 and a servant born in London is also shown living there.
In 1886 when he probated his mother's will, he lived at 10, Albert Hall Mansions, Kensington Gore, London SW.
He is shown on the 1891 census for England as a Russian Merchant and Widower living at 27, Onslow Gardens with his niece Eliza M. Wilson, daughter of his sister Eliza Ferrier Wilson and 3 servants - cook, parlourmaid and housemaid. According to FreeBMD, a John Ferrier married in 1890 Jul-Aug-Sep in Kensington Greater London, his wife could have been either Emily Gordon or Eliza Temple Waterman but I think Emily Gordon is more likely as FreeBMD also has an entry for an Emily Ferrier who died in Oct/Nov/Dec 1890 in Kensington.
John remarried in June 1897, at Kingston, Middlesex, and in 1901 was living in Rushmere, 12 Southside, Wimbledon Common with his new wife Gertrude, their two small daughters and 6 servants including a coachman. The coachman and his family lived at the stables belonging to the property.
Gertrude Grace SCOTT born c. 1869 in Mill Hill, London, England, was the daughter of Charles SCOTT & Elizabeth H?
They had two daughters:
Enid Grace Scott Ferrier, born c. 1899 in Wimbledon, London, England. Ruth Euphemia Meldrum Ferrier, born c. 1900 in Wimbledon, London, England.
Ruth was named for John’s aunt Euphemia, sister of his mother Elizabeth Meldrum. John was obviously very fond of his aunt, her gravestone reads
“Erected by John Ferrier, Merchant London in loving and grateful memory of his aunts, Euphemia Meldrum, who died 23 November 1867 aged 73 years and Isabella Meldrum who died 13th July 1865 aged 64 years”
regards,
Lindsay

I keep exceeding the allowed characters .. sorry for the split posts ..
Child #2: Ferrier Thomas Meldrum pn[4247] Sex M (-1842-1881-) Birth: Dundee,Angus,Scotland Christening: 1842/MAR/17 Dundee,Angus,Scotland Marriage: 1870/2q Manchester,,England, Reference=8d 461 Census: 1871/APR/2 Age:29 Stretford,Lancashire,England, Condition=M, Address=4 Station Villas, Occupation=Linen Merchant, Age=29, Birthplace=Scotland Census: 1881/APR/3 Age:36 Forgan,Fife,Scotland, Condition=M, Address=Tayview House, Address=Tayview House, Occupation=West India Merchant, Occupation=West India Merchant, Role=Head, Age=36, Status=M, Birthplace=Dundee, Angus, Scotland
Thomas Meldrum FERRIER Born on 17 Mar 1842 in Dundee, Angus, died 11th March 1897. His death certificate as registered by his brother, John, shows his occupation to have been Linen Merchant. He died of Acute Bronchitis after 5 days at Montpelier, Dundee.
Thomas was married to Elizabeth Frances McGuire (Bessie) born c. 1848 in Manchester, Lancashire, England in Apr/May/Jun of 1870 according to FreeBMD in Manchester.
They are shown on the 1871 census as living in Stretford, Lancashire. Thomas (29), a Linen Merchant, Elizabeth (23), his wife and their newborn son, Charles aged 1 month, born in Stretford. Also in the household is nurse, Martha Henwood and servant, Mary Hughes. Elizabeth’s 19 year old sister, Emma McGuire born in Patricroft, Lancashire was living with them too.
In 1881, he resided in Tayview House, Forgan, Fife, his occupation was West India Merchant with Bessie and their 3 children,
Gibson Ferrier born c. 1871 in England. Mildred Ferrier born 1873 in Barton Upon Irwell, Lancashire, England. Florence Ferrier born c. 1876 in England.
Thomas was not mentioned in the 1884 will of his mother who died in 1886. She left everything to her son John and daughter Eliza.
I have not been able to find any record of the birth of Charles (aged 1 month in 1871) so it may be that Charles was actually Gibson as shown above on the 1881 census. However, I cannot find a birth record for Gibson either …. This theory seems to be confirmed by the 27th November, 1902 at St. Enoch’s Church, Dundee marriage of Gibson Charles Ferrier (31), son of Thomas Meldrum Ferrier (Jute Merchant, deceased) and Elizabeth Frances Walker, previously Ferrier, m/s McGuire to Edith Watson, 26 year old daughter of Robert Lowson Watson (Wine Merchant, deceased) and Jane Ann xxx? Watson, m/s Soutar.
Gibson Charles, a Jute Merchant and bachelor lived at 2, Douglas Terrace, West Ferry and Edith, spinster, lived at 5, Clarendon Terrace, Dundee.

Child #4: Ferrier Eliza Pierce pn[4859] Sex F (-1846-1873-), Alternative Name=Eliza Pirie, Alternative Name=ELIZA LIVIE Christening: 1846/JUL/29 Dundee,Angus,Scotland Birth: 1846/JUL/29 Dun,Angus,Scotland Miscellaneous event: 1867/NOV/5 Dundee,Angus,Scotland, Role=Wife, Event Type=marriage
Eliza Pirie FERRIER. Born on 29 Jul 1846 in Dundee, Angus, Scotland, Eliza Pirie died in Newburgh, Fife, Scotland on 27 Nov 1923, aged 77. In 1881, she resided in High Street, Newburgh, Fife.
OPR record on GROS shows Eliza Pierce - should be Eliza Pirie. She died at 12 noon at Abbey Lodge, Newburgh, Fife of Cerebral Haemorrhage. Death registered by her son, Gibson Wilson of 169, Queen's Gate, London.
In 1851, Eliza Ferrier, aged 4 was living in Ferry-Port-on-Craig with her aunts, Euphemia and Isabella Meldrum, sisters to her mother, Elizabeth Meldrum Ferrier. Euphemia’s will shows that Isabella had a natural daughter, also called Elizabeth, no surname given and as yet unfound. Although Eliza Pirie Ferrier’s death certificate shows her to have been the daughter of Gibson Ferrier and Elizabeth Meldrum, I have wondered if perhaps she was actually Isabella’s daughter, adopted by her Aunt Elizabeth and Gibson but this is just speculation.
Eliza Pirie Ferrier married Thomas WILSON, born c.1835 in Newburgh, Fife, Scotland.
They had the following children:
Gibson Wilson Born c.1872 in Newburgh, Fife, Scotland.
Eliza Wilson Born c.1873 in Newburgh, Fife. In 1891, Eliza lived in London with her uncle, John Ferrier.
Thomas Wilson. Born c. 1874 in Newburgh, Fife. Ernest Wilson Born c. 1878 in Newburgh, Fife. I would be very interested if anyone can decipher what is written next to the 'tick' by Eliza's name on the 1861 census - attached.

I am not sure if I am in the right spot, but I am looking for family..I am descended through the Ferrier family, they went to the Us in the early, mid 1700's. I have Andrew who was born in either Scotland, or US , he married Jean Marlin, daughter of William and Elizabeth (who possibly was a Ferrier) born in Scotland. The father of Andrew might be Samuel, from Scotland and his Grandfather might have been John Ferrier, possibly from Ireland.

Hi,
I have a William Ferrier b. 25/7/1794 in Kinnell, Forfar whose father was also William which might fit in with your william b 1760s. The father was listed as a dyker - later descendants were stonemasons - and his wife was Catherine Bowen. Alexander is also one of the names which appears with regularity in the descendants.
Any possibility of a link?
Hello, am new to this..I have a gggg grandfather called William Ferrier born 1804 Forfar Scotland, married to elspeth gibb 1823, their son was Alexander carey ferrier b.1833 married to Elizabeth Dear, as far as i know they had two children, my gg grandmother Mary Jane Ferrier b.1861 at old red castle, lunan bay, and Alexander Cairey Ferrier. Mary Jane married James flemming in 1891. That's as far as I can go, would lve to hear from anyone who can tell me more. Am intrigued by old red castle birth as I have been there and it has been in ruins for a long time.. wondered if it was actually somewhere else.

Hi Mogs
Welcome to RootsChat
Not sure if have used IGI (International Genealogical Index) on www.familysearch.org. It's free to use. If you do what is called a 'parent search', you will see up to 10 children showing for William Ferrier and Elspeth Gibb, including Alexander's details:
ALEXANDER FERRIER Birth: 22 SEP 1833 Kirkden, Angus
To do a parent search, once you are on the IGI screen, simply put in the father and mother's full names on the r/h side. The British Isle/Scotland and then press search.
Try doing the same thing for Alexander and Elizabeth Dear and you will see they show at least 8 children (maybe more as IGI stops around 1874).
Not sure how much you have already. Have you looked for the families in the censuses etc.?
