Hilda or Isabel
« on: Thursday 23 March 06 15:42 GMT (UK) »

I have on the 1891 census a Hilda McQueen (under 1 month) with her family in Carlisle.

In 1901 there is no Hilda but there is a 10 year Isabel McQueen with the family.

There is no bmd for a Hilda McQueen but there is for Isabel.

Do you think it would be a safe assumption to say that Hilda and Isabel are one in the same (perhaps they hadnt decided on the childs name when the census man came and by the time they registered it they had changed their name)

Thoughts please

My thoughts are: you're probably right but I wouldn't assume anything until that certificate spells it out loud and clear!

But that's what happened with my gg-g'mother - in 1870 (US) census
she was 7 months old and called Mary W. MacGregor, but she became Anne W. MacGregor by 1880 and was Annie for the rest of her life.

(And 100 years later my cousin was Joseph for the first few weeks until they decided he looked more like a Sam - and was registered as Sam...).

Maybe my family are just indecisive  Smiley

A trip to the records office proved that they are one in the same. I bet she was relieved that she wasnt a Hilda all her days.

i have the same problem
in the 1851 census i find my great grandmother was called elizabeth pybus, when she married she called herself isabella.
i have traced her birth entry and she is recorded as isabella pybus, so i should know by thursday if i am correct
