Debbie
Many thanks for your response which checks with my reckoning.
All I need now is a family name for Mary Emmeline of Milford, Pembs, who I've hunted for all over ancestry/bmd's etc. to no avail.
By coincidence we're staying very close to Milford at the end of April, searching for evidence of my wife's Owen family.
Thanks and regards Frisby

The Evans entry certainly ties in - where not much else does! Happy hunting ... Frisby

I support the suggestion from DebbieG. I have an old ancestral Lawrence family tree document, which states that William Lawrence married an Evans - no Christian names provided, unfortunately, and no details of children. I have not been able to find that marriage - there are several Lawrence / Evans marriages in FreeBMD. I realize that this is rather soft information, but it comes from a credible source - it is worth investigating.
I have written to Frisby, off-list, with some additional details.
Yes, William Lawrence (1829 - c1880), a farmer of Croydon, Surrey, and Mary Emmeline, his wife, had a large family. I have identified their children, including William Richard Percy Lawrence and 11 other younger siblings, the youngest being Beatrice Constance Lawrence, born in Croydon about 1877. The 1861 census for this family shows Mary Emmeline as having been born about 1833 in Milford, Pembrokeshire. By the 1881 census, Mary was a widow, living in Rosedale House, Reigate, Surrey.
Best wishes.

Hi Frisby,
I wrote you a personal message, a while back. No answer. You possibly did not receive it.
Here is what I have on the family of William and Mary Emmeline Lawrence, of Croydon, Surrey:
William Lawrence, son of Richard and Martha Lawrence, born in Betterton, baptized in Ardington, Berks, on August 28th., 1829; [unverified] William married Evans; Free BMD shows seven William Lawrence (or Laurence) / Evans marriages in the period 1849 to 1865: Q2 of 1850 in Marylebone, Q1 of 1851 in Stepney, Q2 of 1852 in Newport, M., Q2 of 1852 in East London, Q1 of 1856 in Shrewsbury, Q2 of 1862 in W. Derby and Q2 of 1865 in Swansea; at the 1861 census, William 31 was a farmer of 1,000 acres in Ham Farm House, in Shirley, in Croydon, living with wife, Mary Emmeline 28, who had been born in Milford, Pembrokeshire and son, William Richard Percy 11 months; by the 1871 census, at Ham Farm House, William was a Land Agent, living with his family of 7 daughters and one son, all born in Croydon, Surrey; William died about 1880; at the 1881 census Emily 50, widow, was living in Rosedale House, Gatton Road, in Reigate Foreign, Surrey with seven of her unmarried children; 1891 and 1901 censuses, Mary living in Croydon; William and Mary Emmeline had issue:

[B] Mary T. Lawrence, born in Croydon about 1860 / 61; the birth of a Mary Theresa Lawrence was registered in Croydon in Q3 of 1861; in 1881, she was 20, governess, living with her mother in Reigate Foreign;
[C] Emmeline Martha Lawrence, born in Croydon about 1863; in Q3 of 1889, in Croydon, she married Edward Nelson Wanklyn;
[D] Eleanor Maude Lawrence, born in Croydon about Q1 of 1864; in Q2 of 1885, in Croydon, Surrey, she married John Frederick Shelley, who had been born in 1860 in Nuneaton, Warwickshire; [E] Alice Lawrence, born in Croydon about 1865; [Note: there were three distinct Alice Lawrence’s births registered in Croydon in 1864 / 65 - cannot tell which is ours]
[F] Hilda Lawrence, born in Croydon about 1866;
[G] George Douglas Courtenay Lawrence, born in Croydon about Q1 of 1868; at 1881 census, a boarder in school in Newgate Street, London;

Are you descended from William Richard Percy Lawrence? If you are, then we are distant cousins. I would appreciate any details of the descendants of this William Richard Percy Lawrence that you would be happy to share with me.
Best wishes.
Peter Ferreira.

Peter,
Many thanks for the post here and apologies, as your earlier message must have gone astray.
I have pretty much the same data as yourself:
The Times archive records the marriage at St Stephen's, South Dulwich on 19th Jul 1887, of William Richard Percy Lawrence, son of the late W Lawrence of Shirley, Croydon, to Amy, daughter of E T E (Edward Thomas Edmonds) Besley of Rose Mount, Sydenham Hill, Barrister at Law.
Similarly reported is the marriage of Emmeline Martha Lawrence and Edward Nelson, eldest son of the late Rev. Edward Wanklyn of Bournemouth, which took place on 2nd inst., at Holy Trinity, Selhurst, Surrey.
Alice Julia's marriage to Edwin Henry WIlson is in IGI(!) as 14 July 1892, also at Selhurst.
It is through my wife's maternal line that I have followed this (non-blood) link with your Lawrence family: I understand that Isabel Sythy Lawrence married Leonard Arthur Parry (Q1 1898), their daughter, Marjorie B Parry becoming Giovanni Battista (Sir John) Barbirolli's first wife. Barbirolli's 2nd wife, Evelyn Alice Rothwell (now age 96 and living, as far as we know, in North London - I'd love know how to contact her without causing alarm) is my wife's 2nd cousin.
Thanks again and regards Frisby

Hi Frisby,
Many thanks for your very detailed and very valuable response.
Do you have a more exact date for that marriage of Emmeline Martha Lawrence with Edward Nelson Wanklyn, please? Which month was it in?
There are three or more births recorded in the BMD for Croydon, about 1864 / 65, for an Alice Lawrence. There is one Alice Mary, an Alice Julia and an Alice Edith. I cannot figure out which one is the daughter of my cousin William Lawrence, without requesting three separate birth certificates. As this family is only a distant lateral branch, I am averse to incurring that sort of expenditure.
Do you know anything about the Argentina connection for the Wanklyn family? They, later, moved to South Africa, I am informed.
Best wishes.
Peter.

Sorry Peter.
Emmeline Martha marriage 02 July 1889 @ Holy Trinity, Selhurst.
My money is on Alice Julia, birth reg'n Q4 1865 as the 4th daughter of William and that she it was she who married Edwin Henry Wilson, 14 Jul 1892. All the dates and places tie in, so she'd be the one I would chase up first.
Edward's brother, John Bradshaw Wanklyn, (08/07/1825 - 01/04/1873) married Maria Helen Robinson, who was born in Buenos Aires (20/11/1828 - 20/11/1922) at St John's Buenos Aires Anglican Cathedral on 07 Oct 1851.
Is that your South American link?

Hi Frisby,
Many thanks for the date for Emmeline Martha's marriage.
You are fantastic!! Where on earth did you pick up that Buenos Aires marriage detail? So, the previous generation of Wanklyns was in Buenos Aires. The connection might even have gone back a further generation or two. I guess that they probably were ranchers, there - still to be verified. You would not have a Wanklyn on your trustry e-address book, would you, Frisby?
Best wishes.
Peter.
