Joseph enlisted in the Military in 1863 & was a soldier settler as having fought in the Maori wars, serving in the 2nd. Waikato Reg. They had several children born in NZ. : Like to find out any info. about the family especially when & where the children were born.

Thanks very much for the info. Riley!
So My G/grand father was a cabinetmaker hey, I must have inherited his wood working skills. I have always loved working with wood & according to my friends I am pretty good at it although its not my trade. Now that I know that Joseph Morelli was a soldier in the Maori Wars, I will try & get hold of a replica medal if I can? I have my father's & grand father's War medals & will include my G/grandfather's Replica medal (when I get it) to them & have them framed. I will then pass them onto my son who has always been interested in War medals.
By the way you must be a NZ? Who will win the Anzac day Footy match Australia or NZ.now that Benji Marshall is out. You Kiwi's love to beat us at anything don't you. The old NZ.newspapers on line are really interesting, once again thanks heaps.

Hi Riley !
The info you sent me was great, especially about the battle at Orakau, You have so much info. on line over in NZ.
Yes M. Morelli born in 1868 was a male child died at birth. Joseph Anthony Morelli died 13/4/1909 at 123 Station St. Newtown Sydney, he was buried in Rookwood cemetery. His death certificate stated that he had 6 sons & 2 girls living & 1 son deceased. His wife Elizabeth Maybury died 6/2/1920 at Leichhardt Sydney she was buried alongside Joseph in grave No. 255 Section AAAA. Their Son Lawrence died 5/2/1921 in San Francesco USA.
It was very sad reading about how the Maori's were dispossessed of their land by the English. I have a similar story on my father's side, his g/grandmother was a full blooded Aboriginal women from the Wiradjai tribe. But unlike the Maori's the Aboriginal were peace loving & not war like. The English ended up massacring nearly all of her Mudgee Clan in 1824.

Once again thank you for all your assistance Riley.
About 7 years ago I was doing a consulting job at your big coal Fired power station ,near Hamilton & I brought my wife over for a holiday. We stayed at Hamilton & while I slaved at the power station she decided to see the many sights around the city One night when I got home from work she said that she went to the Museum there & it was great, & that I would also like it to.
Well I said I haven't got any ancestors in Kiwi Land & I wasn't particular interested in the war. How wrong was I & thanks to you I have now found out a lot about Joseph Morelli & his family! I have chased the Morelli's back to about 1780s in England mainly around Middlesex. It appears that they were the first Morelli's to live in England all their wives were English as were the Morellis evidently they originated from Northern Italy (still chasing that up). As a young bloke I had a very dark complexion hence my mates called me a Diago.I must have been a throw back or most probably from my Aboriginal ancestor.
Regards
Brian

Gidday Brian,
Archives New Zealand Wellington office has a card index The New Zealand War Medal: Awards to Colonial Units where I found the following citations:
MORELLI Joseph Pte 2nd Waikato Regt Orakau 1860. App 1872 Awarded 1872 AD32/3562 AD36/3 1545 AD36/3 1560
The last two references refer to the New Zealand War Medal Register (Archives ref: AD36/3 REPRO 1660). Applicants are listed and identified by number. Joseph Morelli has two mentions, numbers 1545 and 1560 (see below.
#1545 Name: MORELLI Joseph Address: c/o Capt DEAN Vol Art Off Sydney Rank & Corps: 2nd Waikato Actions: Orakau Dates: 1867 Date of Award: 21 Nov 1873 To Whom Sent: George F HASLIE/ HASTIE? No & date of Issue: 180/1F 21 Nov 1873.
#1560 Name: MORELLI Joseph Address: c/o Leamer & Robinson?, Sydney Rank & Corps: 2nd Waikato Actions: Orakau Dates: 1867 Date of Award: 24 Mch 64 To Whom Sent: - No & Date of Issue: -
It was when I sighted the file AD32/3562 that I struck gold. This file (3 pages) contains Joseph Morelli’s written intent to apply for the New Zealand War Medal and two application forms completed by him at Sydney NSW on 11 March 1872 and 30 November 1872. The references AD36/3 1545 & 1560 refer to these documents.
Here's a transciption from his first application:
Name and Address: Gunner Joseph MORELLI No 6 Battery of New South Wales Volunteer Artillery, C/o Captain H. DEAN, Volunteer Brigade Office, Sydney.
Corps Served: 2nd Company of 2nd Regiment of Waikato Militia under Col. HAULTAIN. Capt. DRURY was the captain. Private four years and a half. From August 1865 till June 1868 when I left the Waikato. Regimental number 168.
Period of Service: From September 1863 till the Close of the War. I was the Right Wing of the Flying Column for 3 months then I went to Raglan and from there to Kihikihi. I was at the storming of Oracko (sic), for 3 days and nights and I did good service in the field.
Remarks: And I have never been a Defaulter during that time. I came from Sydney with the First Volunteers. I have no one in Sydney that I can get to sign this form that has been in the Service, but I can give you some names that can certify the truth of this statement. Major St Clare TISDALL and Captain FREER. Dated at Sydney 11 March 1872.
The second Application form repeats much of the same information and I wonder if he believed the first application was lost or forgot/was unaware that it had been sent, and reapplied. His address on the second form was C/o Leamer & Robertson Steam Saw Mill, Bathurst Street, Sydney.
It seems that he may have records of his service in the Volunteer Artillery unit in Sydney after his arrival from New Zealand, and you might even find a record of his passage at National Archives Australia.
I have requested a copy of the file AD32/3562 from Archives NZ. If you PM me with your name and address I’ll post them to you once they arrive.
Cheers, riley
