Hi, I posted looking for my Arnold family in 1851 about a month ago & was given some very helpful information. Today I found in the 1851 census index for Braintree District that as well as my Edward, Mary & Emma Arnold with the reference ESS 19 FCF there were also a John & Sarah Arnold both aged 77 on the same reference, which points to them being Edward's parents. Could someone check this for me please. Also if possible I'd like John & Sarah Arnold's entry in the 1841 census.
I couldn't find Edward's christening in the Finchingfield Parish Records at the Southend Record Office today, (there is at least one Finchingfield fiche either mislaid or missing) but did find 2 other children for John & Sarah Arnold. John Arnold was a blacksmith.
I couldn't do the census lookups at Southend, they only have the 1851 & 1861 indexes there, & I didn't have time to get to Chelmsford.

I couldn't find a baptism for Edward at Finchingfield, but I did find these. Elizabeth dau of John and Sarah Arnold baptised 19/7/1801 John son of John and Sarah Arnold baptised 10/4/1803 Amey Arnold dau of John and Sarah Arnold baptised 11/12/1808 William son of John and Sarah Arnold of Cornish Hall End Finchingfield a Blacksmith baptised 28/8/1814 Harriett Sparks dau of John and Sarah Arnold of Finchingfield a Blacksmith baptised 27/7/1817.
Thanks Sue, still about as clear as mud. There were at least 2 other Arnold families having children about that time, was hoping the census might be the clincher. Thanks for the baptisms, looks like some largish gaps, so maybe I'll find Edward's in another Church.
I bet our ancestors laugh themselves silly at the lengths we have to go to, to find out information that was common knowledge to them.
Essex Marriage index shows a marriage at Finchingfield between John Arnell a bachelor and Sarah Sparkes a spinster both of the parish on 27/10/1800. Long shot but could be Edwards parents.
Hi Sue, Thanks does look like it could be John & Sarah's marriage. Even if John wasn't his father, he was probably his uncle. As I said before there were 3 Arnold couples having children about the correct time. Not a massive number. So very probably all related.
Hopefully when I get to the ERO they'll have some more info, the guide says they've got the 1821 draft census 1831 census return & 1834 list of occupiers (not sure how much use they'll be), plus some non-conformist records, plus the Bishop's Transcripts, they should also have the fiche that's missing/mislaid at Southend.
All I need is to find the time to go. Thanks again for your help Chris
