TURNER/CLARKE/DEEKS of Hintlesham
« on: Monday 23 October 06 21:57 UTC (UK) »

I am searching for the birth of my 3x great grandmother Esther TURNER who according to 1881 census was born in Hintlesham.

I have a feeling that she may be connected to the Clarkes or Deeks somehow - all a bit of a mystery!

Can anyone shed any light on this or suggest where I can look next?

Suffolk record office have done a pretty thorough search for me - no luck.

Hoping that someone out there might be connected to these families somehow!

Can you give a bit more detail. What would be a rough year of birth, what other censuses have you found her on.
Who did she marry and have you got the marriage cert and if so does it give fathers name.

Thanks for replying.

Esther TURNER was born c 1833.  She married John MASON in London in 1853 and her father is named on marriage cert as Thomas Turner, farmer.

She died in Battersea in 1889.

I have found her with the family in 1871, in Wigmore Street, London, when her age is given as 38 and her birthplace simply "Suffolk".

In 1881 a person I assume is her daughter -Esther MASON age 17 appears on the census for Hintlesham as a niece living with the Deeks family.

Sarah Deeks' maiden name was Clarke.  There are several references on various censuses and burial records to people with "Turner Clarke" as their middle and surnames.

I've been nagging away at this for some years - any help / suggestions gratefully received!

Well this one is a puzzle.

The best I could find was that in the 1841 census for Hintlesham there was an 11yr old Hester Clarke with what appears to be parents Thomas and Mary.
Could they possibly have been Turner and dropped the name.
There doesn't appear to be any Turners in Hintlesham in 1841.
I reckon the best bet would be to see if you can find a baptism for Esther in the Hintlesham parish records.

In 1851 the said Esther birth year put at 1833 is a visitor in London with a family called MAJOR. Birthplace given as Chattisham which is close to Hintlesham.

Thanks for this - some new leads to get me thinking.

Suffolk records office have done a search of the Hintlesham parish baptisms for me - no sign of Esther.  In 1851 there is a Robert Turner in Hintlesahm, and the churchyard has at least one Turner gravestone , but no names I recognise.

Will follow up the Esther visiting the Major family.

Thanks again. Smiley
