gypsey/travellers name change

have been told the family changed name from heath to gale around the time of the war to avoid being called up?
the heaths were gypsies who plied their wares between somerset (bath) to devon and london , most of the family settled in bath somerset around 1920,s
any advice on trying to find them on any census or is it a case of trawling through every census at those locations for every year
advice appreciated

There are plenty of indexes available ................. do you know who you are looking for say in 1901?

The 1881 is searchable by occupation/address (use the keyword search for tent/caravan/van/gypsy/travelling etc. etc.) http://www.ancestry.co.uk

The 1901 is also searchable by surname/occupation (use the advanced person search) .............. http://213.161.80.228/

There wasn't any obligation to included people not living in houses prior to 1861 so you might be unlucky with 1841 and 1851 but I have managed to find mine from 1861-1901.
