The wife's G-grandmother on her 90th birthday

German Ancestors - Haase, Bühl
« on: Friday 05 September 08 18:48 BST (UK) »

I am trying to find any information about my great-grandparents:-

Emil August Wilhelm HAASE, born 1866, Germany
Luise Eleonora Charlotte Magdelen BÜHL, born 1868, Kunzelsau, Germany.

I believe they travelled independently to England, where they married on 30th April 1891. (They do not appear in the 1891 census)

The 1901 census shows Emil's mother, Christiane Haase (b 1863) living with them, but only shows their origin as Germany.

I've tried Ancestry.com but without success.

All help appreciated.

As the census was taken on the 5th April 1891, they must have had some timing there! Do you have the address from the marriage certificate, in case they're hiding under badly misspelt names?

According to the marriage certificate, they were both staying at 4 Currie Street, Wandsworth,  London. The marriage was by Banns, which implies they were in England for at least 3 weeks before the marriage.  Huh

I've checked the 1891 census for that address and they are not shown, although it is occupied by another German family, but no chance of a misspelling (I've also checked all the other houses in Currie Street).

I know most of the family history from 1901 onwards, but even that has its problems, as Emil left his wife and 2 children and apparently worked his passage to America. Lüise then had a baby by another man and went to live with him, eventually dying in 1942, but I can't find the death certificate (next week's problem!)

I'd like to find out more about the German side, hence the posting, but it would be good to finish the UK bits as well.
