why did they return to the UK?
« on: Monday 27 March 06 13:03 UTC (UK) »

Hi

Wondered if anyone could help me?  I've found my grandmother and great grandfather on the Canadian Genealogy Site, entering Grosse Isle Hospital.  They travelled on the ship Virginian arriving at Grosse on 27/07/1912 and being released from there on 30/07/1912.
They are George Arthur Cutsforth age 49 and Florence Edith Cutsforth age 8.  I'm not sure if any other members of the family arrived with them, the plan was for them to arrive first and look for employment for George and accommodation so that the remaining members of the family could join them.  For some reason they returned  to the UK.  How can I find out when they returned and possibly why?

Thanks for any help

Hi Fiona,

How soon after did they return to England?  Since you have the ship and date, perhaps there were others but they did not need to be quarantened and you will be able to find them on the passenger list.

This is the microfilm number that should have the Virginian on that arrived in Quebec

National Archives Reel #:  T-4789     July 21, 1912 to August 12, 1912

Hi Karen

Many thanks for the info.  Not sure how long they stayed, is it possible they were refused entry to Canada for some reason and came straight home?

I'm not sure? I wouldn't think so, because Canada was part of the "British Colony".  Perhaps they had such a bad experience at Grosse Isle to start with and then being in Quebec where no one would speak English, he thought, to h**l with this and went back to England.  Couldn't blame him really.

I wonder if you ordered the medical records that are at Grosse Isle if there would be any other information on it?  You could always email the Museum and ask

http://www2.parkscanada.gc.ca/lhn-nhs/qc/grosseile/index_e.asp

They may also be able to tell you if people who were there were turned away.
