Looking for some literature or reference on the 1883ish Government Land Drainage scheme in County Cavan. My Great Grandfather James Kavanagh lived in Kilnacrott near Ballyjamesduff during this time and worked as a Ganger on this project reporting to William Percy French who had just qualified as a Civil Engineer at Trinity Collage, Dublin. Percy as we all know was better known for his talents in songwriting, dramatics, banjo playing and watercolor painting. His two greatest songs being 'Phil the Fluter's Ball' and 'Slattery's Mounted Fut'.

Like to learn more on this project and welcome any pointers in the right direction.

Regards
John G.

Hi everyone,

Giving this a ‘bump-up’ the list. My Great Grandfather James Kavanagh worked as a gardener for Guinness and Mahon in Dublin. Later James, Catherine and family moved to Kilnacrott where he worked as a caretaker for Guinness & Mahon. What lands did G&M own in this area? James could not have been too busy during this time as he was also able to work as ganger on the drainage scheme.

Anything further on this would be very much appreciated. Smiley

Kindest
